New build lawn revamp

Post by EliOklesh » October 13th, 2020, 9:19 am

Hi all, new to the forum.

Location: central NC
Soil type: Slightly acidic, red Carolina clay

Just bought a newly built house and of course that means I have a lot of work to do. Builders sodded fescue in the front, and that is doing very well. Backyard looked like The surface of Mars.

In mid-September I rented a core aerator and did the whole yard. Reseeded with tall fescue and chased it with lawn starter fertilizer. A month later I’ve got decent results but I can tell there will be bare patches. There are some clover and various weeds to eliminate as well.

The question is: In the spring I plan on doing a good weed and feed regimen to clear out the garbage, then maybe about a month later I will seed more fescue. Is this a good strategy or should I just weed and feed in spring, then reseed again the next fall? Or is there anything I can do now (mid-October) to give me a jump?

Thanks!
eo
