Re: Fescue or nutsedge?
I think I’m going to answer my own question, lol. It’s nutsedge.
I looked at it closely. It’s slightly lighter than the fescue. I got the little bottle of sedgehammer. It’s roots do go straight to the center of the earth!
Wind should die down and warm up by weekend.
Waiting for soil report before doing anything with fertilizer or other stuff.

Sedges do tend to be more summery sorts of things. Take a stem, roll it between your fingers. Sedges tend to be triangular. Not all, but many.
To the eye, the color there is fescue (that's not definitive either; the sedge that infests my garden is a nice dark green). But it's another indicator that this is not necessarily a bad grass. Grasses frequently come back in patches and clumps, particularly after a hard winter. Mine's currently doing this; it looks like moss clumps at the moment.

OK, Maybe I'll sit on it a bit to see if it turns the bright green I know as nutsedge. Going to fertilize this weekend I think. My soil test is coming soon. Just got the invoice from Logan.

Get out a trowel and carefully dig it up. If it has a nut on the end of the root system (on a mature plant), it’s nutsedge.
Tall rescue has deep roots. If you find you can’t get to the end of the root, my money would be on tall fescue

Re: Fescue or nutsedge?
The roots are about 4 inches at most and I did feel some little rocky balls at the end of the roots.
I mowed yesterday. Will wait till Saturday or Sunday.
It's going to be too windy till then and I don't like spraying in the wind. It's uncouth!
If it's fescue, nothing will happen. If it's nutsedge, it will die.
Only going to mix up 2 gallons. Should be more than enough. There's hardly any in the back yard. It's all in the front.

Re: Fescue or nutsedge?
Applied Sedgehammer last Saturday and moved late Monday. 2 days later, spots are not growing quicker than surrounding grass now and appears to be getting lighter in color.
Got a new Chapin tow behind spreader with autostop. Put down rest of Barricade, although it might be a little late. And I put down 50 lbs of Lesco starter fertilizer as recommended on soil forum. Walking lawn was getting too much for me.
Sprayed some clover because the old man next door likes to have clover to feed the rabbits. Ugg.

Re: Fescue or nutsedge?
Thats not nutsedge.
Nutsedge pops up midsummer when its really hot outside - typically in areas with poor drainage.
