2021 is Cicada Brood X Year
Anytime now (between the later part of April and basically Memorial Day), the 17-year cycle of Cicadas will begin to emerge from the ground, and set up one of the loudest sounds of Nature. Billions of cicadas will make their mating call sounds and your yard will be littered with dead cicadas (and yes your pets will eat them too), if you're near a hotspot.

Last time, I had three of the things. At work, it was a cicada-fest. Did somebody remind them to wear teeny-tiny masks?

Think of all the good OM that will be left behind! Doesn’t look like they will catch my area

Thanks for the map Andy! It looks like south-central PA will have some activity but south of me in MD will get whacked...

I patched a couple of spots where I wiped out some Triv and I also noticed those holes after a few days. Couldn't figure out what the heck they were. Squirrels would make a bigger mess than that. Then I saw your post and bingo!! The light went on in my head albeit dimly.

I don't know a lot about them, how far down are they in the previous 16 years and how quick do they move to the surface. I didn't know if typical pesticides would have an impact on them if you have been treating your yards of the past several years? Or if they are two deep.....

Re: 2021 is Cicada Brood X Year
Last evening they were crawling all over the lawn and the dogs have been munching on them like potato chips... my wife is freaking out that the dogs are going to die from it. I was wondering if the mulching mower would turn them into a little protein shake for the lawn

I've read numerous articles reassuring dog and cat owners that these are harmless for them, and can actually be grilled for a tasty snack for humans as well.
(I've eaten crickets and numerous other insects myself, so the idea is not particularly gruesome. I'll try most things once).
