Weed Identification in Cool Season lawn

Post by Notchy » April 17th, 2021, 4:41 pm

Hi, I am in Ontario Canada and wanted to know what grassy weed I have in my KBG and Fescue Truf lawn.

It tried a couple of apps like google lens and it states it is poa triv and then I tried another app PlantNet and it said yellow nutsedge.

Anybody can assist in identifying correctly. This grassy weed is taller than the rest of my grass and is sporadic through my lawn.

I think I have the same thing. I’d call it yellow nutsedge. If you use Sedgehammer, make sure you use a nonionic sulfactant. I bought a gallon because it doesn’t go bad. I also bought the bottle of Sedgehammer that does 40 gallons. The weed is a big problem in my neighborhood.

Best of luck.

Notchy, does the Toronto area have the same stringent herbicide laws as the Quebec province does? I see members recommending herbicides that aren't permitted in some areas of Canada,

@andy10917 Yes, Toronto has herbicide restrictions but I can get access to herbicides. What grassy weed do you think I have in my lawn?

Sorry, I gave up on identifying grassy weeds from photos long ago.

Is that from this year? Isn't it way too early for nutsedge?

I can't say definitively what it is, but I can say definitively that it's not yellow nutsedge. Sedges have edges--i.e., a triangular stem (in cross section).

Thanks @glenforest for your insight. So glad to eliminate one of the weeds labeled off my identification list. 😊
