Preventative fungicide program

Post by Pway » May 11th, 2021, 11:39 am

I think some folks on the board start a preventative fungicide program mid May or so. This past winter and this spring have been very wet here and I’m wondering what plans people have (for those that do preventative spraying). Thanks.

I put down some HeadwayG April 8th. So far, that's my plan.

I have some Serenade and Actinovate sitting on the shelf in the garage. I've had it a few years with plans to use it, but never have.

I started this years preventive program with a product called Cease, that is supposed to be equivalent to Serenade. I can't find Serenade by the quart anymore, so had to settle for a gallon of Cease. I would never use 2.g gallons of Serenade, hopefully this Cease product works out.

I am also started the BLSC and KH last week, so I guess its lawn season :-)

There is no reason that "Cease" shouldn't do the job - it's the same ingredient at the same concentration. Chances are that it is made at the same factory. My guess is that Bayer didn't want to deal at the retail level.

I use the BioAdvanced hose end sprayer (Propicanizole). Sometimes I will follow up with a granule from a different fungicide group after 30 days to get a different mode of action.

They should make a companion product for "Cease" called "Desist."

Just saying.

Thanks folks. I’ve got Heritage, Serenade, and Bio-advanced so I think I’ll rotate and begin in a week or two. I had about a 3000 sq ft area last year that had fungal problems. I did not do a preventative but used Heritage and Bio at curative levels, to little avail...

@andy10917 Do you only apply serenade to the lawn or beds too?

It's fine on beds. It is not a chemical, it is an enhanced strain of a bacteria that preys on other bacteria and makes an antibiotic-like substance. It can be used in vegetable gardens too.

BTW, all humans have that bacteria in their gastrointestinal tract too - it helps in the control of pathogens.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear... is there a benefit of spraying in the gardens too?

I've been thinking of trying it on my zinnia to combat PM in fall. I use a shot of an antifungal in September, but it's not a good idea to keep doing so (even if the one I use--Daconil--is not one they're likely to evolve resistance to).
