Angle Stripes?

Post by Hammbone81 » May 14th, 2021, 12:11 pm

This is a pretty vain thing, but fun.

When mowing, I alternate my direction every time. So I have 4 total directions. N-S, E-W, NW-SE, NE-SW. All 45° separation. However, I've recently considered changing my diagonal direction to move of a 30° angle or more to get a rhombus shape. (I have a roller for my Toro SR, but I took it off, it's easier to mow without it and the mower leaves okay stripes on it's own).

Does anyone else do this? Or is this just silly talk?

Looks complicated, but I look forward to the pictures when you're done!

Haha at our old house I definitely did this. I’m a huge fan of striping. At our new home I don’t have all the grass in yet to be able to stripe, but in the future I will for sure.

I have a 44" deck on my Simplicity Broadmoor. All Simplicity's have a hanging deck and a roller for striping. I basically do what you are considering. I alternately mow in 2 different directions that results in a pattern probably somewhere in between what you have posted. I really like it, in fact, a few people walking by my house just the other day commented on how nice the stripes look. It accomplishes several things though, not the least of which is to hide all of the different color variations in my mutt of a lawn.

I don't store, but I change directions every now because I have a fiskars manual reel mower, and going in different directions every mow increases the odds that it'll mow instead of just pushing the grass down.

I do concentric circles (actually more of a spiral?), followed by north-south, east-west, then diagonal. I like the looks of the approach you're considering, but I'm pretty sure I'd screw it up if I try (I have a hard enough time with the diagonals).

I reverse direction just to avoid training the grass. And before, and in the future again, with a robotic, they mow pretty randomly anyway.

As a follow up, I thought I'd share some first photos with the new angle.
I need to do each direction a couple more times for it to start to pop (or install the striper).

-One observation I made, that really stood out in these photos, is that I need to put my rows closer together for my 13-13-13 applications.
-Also, it's time for an FAS application, but it's going to be HOT the next few days. Ugh.

I like it. You can actually see the alternating patterns.
