Is there enough time to overseed and Pre M in the fall?

Post by flyin-lowe » July 11th, 2021, 8:05 pm

My one acre renovation I started this spring is going as good as can be expected. There is a decent amount of crabgrass but I knew that would be an issue. I am curious how far along new planted TTTF has to be before you can put down Prodiamine. If the weather cooperates and I overseed the first week of August, could the new TTTF get far enough along that I could then put down a Pre M before winter sets in? I am not certain how soon you can put down Pre M following an overseed. I can always wait on the Pre M until the fall but if I can get a jump start on it I would like to......

Given that crabgrass is an annual, wouldn't you be better suited to drop prodiamine in the spring, on the usual timeline? Then your TTTF could have the entire fall to establish roots?

I'm not entirely sure, but dropping it now doesn't really seem like it would do much. Given it would be completely gone by next spring when crabgrass would actually be coming back.

Depends on what you're trying to prevent - Fall (really very late summer) is the time to apply to prevent Poa Annua, which germinates during the Fall.

I am thinking about trying an August overseed this year with dithopyr pre-m around mid-September. I use up my yearly max of prodiamine in the spring. The worst that can happen is the dithiopyr kills my new growth and I wasted money on seed.
