Newly bought peat--vinegar smell

Post by Green » July 18th, 2021, 11:40 pm

I have never had a batch of peat moss smell like vinegar until last week. I opened a newly-purchased bale--which was vacuum sealed (!)--and immediately smelled a vinegar smell. I decided to use it see if my grass comes up ok...I am starting to reseed a few Triv spots already.

But before I use this on a bigger project, like a renovation, is there anything we need to discuss about this smell?

When I say vacuum sealed, I mean it. The plastic wrapper was shrunken/puckered in at the end. I was like, wow, nice touch...must be really fresh. Then opened it, heard the hiss of air, sniffed it...and vinegar smell.

The grass has started to germinate in the seeded areas where I used this peat moss. So it's apparently not an issue in that respect.
