Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
Hi All,
Baystate fertilizer's last update on their web site was in April. Has anyone been able to get Baystate or are they no longer selling to the public?
Thank you

Re: Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
Last I heard they were only selling by the ballot, which is 40 bags.
I think a couple of people did place orders and pick them up. I can only carry 25 in my pickup, so the 40 bag limit takes me out.
The local nursery used to sell it, they got some in late spring, but havn't gotten any new supply for a while now.

I obviously don’t live in Massachusetts. But that’s a good price.San wrote: ↑July 23rd, 2021, 2:44 pmI emailed them earlier this week and got this (automated) reply:

If I lived in the area, I’d probably rent a truck from Home Depot and use it to transport it home.

Last time I rented a uhaul trailer and picked up 50 bags. Store it in the garage and it lasts me about 2 years. Use it for lawn and all my plants.
It was over the Uhaul stated weight limit for the trailer if I recall correctly, but I wasn't driving aggressively in any way

Ditto "turf_toes. I have pretty good luck with Oceangro which is still cheaper than Milo.

In my area, Home Depot does hourly rentals of F-350s with flatbeds.spectrum1c wrote: ↑July 23rd, 2021, 4:17 pmLast time I rented a uhaul trailer and picked up 50 bags. Store it in the garage and it lasts me about 2 years. Use it for lawn and all my plants.

Another option is to find a neighbor and both get 25 bags.spectrum1c wrote: ↑July 23rd, 2021, 4:17 pmLast time I rented a uhaul trailer and picked up 50 bags. Store it in the garage and it lasts me about 2 years. Use it for lawn and all my plants.

But I guess until/if they get inventory again it doesn’t really matter.

You'd think inventory would be a...constant thing. I mean, it's not like people stop producing it.

Re: Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
Bay State Fertilizer is a municipal side project for the MWRA. It's not its own dedicated business, hence the weird way they handle cash. Between COVID and staffing issues its no wonder inventory fluctuates. Even before COVID they would often run out.
To make matter worse the internet has told everyone what deal it is, and everyone and their brother kind of knows about it now, thats why there is a minimum of a one pallot order. If this were a true commercial enterprise, they would be charging closer to what a bag of milo costs.
Hopefully I can get a group order next year and split a 50 pallot, but its hard getting people to think about lawn fertilizer in March.

Re: Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
I'm hoping they eventually end up selling it all over the Northeast in a big box store as was suggested by them a while back. That and that they fix their bag seams so they no longer split easily.
That said, if they do this, I have to wonder if the cost wont be 4x the pickup price (close to that of Milo). It shouldn't be quite so high, because after all, transportation is not as far. Thats where most of the cost comes from for Milorganite. People in WI pay about 1/3 what we East-Coasters pay for their local brand "cr*p".

Re: Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
I just text Carl directly and he lets me know when they have stock. Minimum is a pallet (50) but they’ll sell in bag increments after that. He said it was too much traffic and a hassle to be servicing 5-10 bag orders, payment etc. now you pay online, give them receipt number and load up.
I buy “off cycle” and store it outside under a tarp. This way I’m not competing with the growing season demand. Bought 70 bags last time I was there, that’s a healthy load for the f150 and trailer.
Stuff works really well and the price is incredible. I apply 16 bags at a time (then promptly get a shower).

Re: Anyone have luck with Baystate Fertilizer in MA?
Just wanted to mention that MWRA again has stock of Bay State Fertilizer, and that lately they seem to have been semi-regularly updating their web site with status.
I called this morning to confirm status, paid online, and the two of us drove on down to get it. We ended up taking two vehicles to be able to keep within max payload, so we put 12 bags in the Ford Focus, and the other 38 bags in a borrowed Suburban.
It's good to be re-stocked for another year -- I've been lax in getting micronutrients down this year due to having run out of Bay State Fertilizer!
