Heavy (but probably steady) rain and Fertilizer

Post by Adam_M » August 30th, 2021, 4:27 pm

We're looking at about +-2 inches of rain from Ida, and I'm looking to get the first batch of fall fertilizer around. My instinct says wait, 2 inches of water is too much, and deal with it after the storm. Is that correct, or could I get away letting the remnants of Ida water in a dose of 19-19-19?

I'm also seeding about 5K of new areas, but with as light as seed is, and with some of these disturbed areas being slopes ...I'm waiting on seed.

I asked the same question, like 6 posts down.

Two inches is really marginal, particularly since the + is dangling off that number. If it were an organic, I'd say yes (I dropped my organics on Sunday, knowing Ida was on the way). Synthetics...no. Even some water-soluble organics I'd be less than comfortable with applying right now.

And since I'm seeing a possibility of up to four inches of rain...

I dropped mine today, 1st app of Urea (45-0-0) last night and watered it in the next morning. We are expecting 1-2” Wednesday into Thursday.I know I didn’t want to risk putting down during the big rain event, so put it down a bit early. I figure worse case if gets washed down deeper and I waste 1 app of the 8. There is always next week.

I am waiting for after the rain to put down BSF in the front.

I ended up holding off. I toyed with the idea of getting a dose of Milo+borax down instead of the synthetic (which I also need), but I thought I remembered reading that boron leaches fairly easily, and I need the boron, so I'm doing to wait until the end of the week.

Based on how the storm hits, maybe halfway through I was thinking of putting on a rain coat and covering the spreader. Crazy? Kinda

Boron does leach, so holding off is a good idea if you don't have plenty of decaying OM releasing more. In real life, it's not really as leachy (to coin a phrase) as nitrogen no matter what they say (I added some a while ago and it's still testing fine), but it does get lost.

Not really. My spreader came with a rain cover and as long as you can pull in the garage to full up, that would work just fine. I've often thought about doing this if it wasn't raining terribly hard.

Looking out, the ducks aren't even particularly active this evening.
