I know it's a controversial subject but I can tell you I have overseeded with and without core aeration. On the job where I core aerated every hole had grass growing up out of it and there was more germination from the seeds in the holes compared to those just laying on the surface. I also think the plugs breaking up and breaking down can help soil contact as well.

It's kind of like the subject of rolling the seeds in with a roller. At some point everyone notices that the grass comes in better the spots where you pressed the seeds in with your foot steps. It's not that the better seed to soil contest doesn't help germination, its that you agitating the weed seeds brings up the the bad stuff at a time when your going to super charge it with ideal conditions, ie water and fertilizer.
Once the poa-a and triv come up, your in trouble, Their isn't much you can do about triv, and poa-a explodes when you feed it this time of year, even if you didnt see it until next spring. Poa-a and triv bothy grow faster than your seed.
I have a lot of either brown dead poa-a of just kbg that got hit with something. I could rake it up, but since my big lawn issue is poa-a. Ill wait until spring and just try to not disturb my pre-m layer. Right now would just bring up the poa-a seeds at the perfect time.

Re: Need opinions for methods on full reno
Well I pulled the trigger on my seeding today. It will be interesting how it turns out. So here was my course of action:
-2500 square feet
-I rented an overseeder and lawn roller from Home Depot.
-First I used a broadcast spreader to apply new lawn fertilizer.
-I used the overseeder on the middle setting and made one vertical pass.
-I then broadcast about 2.5 pounds of seed
-I used the overseeder for a horizontal pass.
-Repeated broadcast of seed.
-I used the overseeder for a diagonal pass.
-I then broadcast the remaining seed.
-Next I lightly watered, then rolled the lawn.
-Last, I watered normally.
-Tomorrow I will apply tenacity.
*Notes:
Slightly concerned because some seed remained visible on soil. But I did not want to rake over everything because there was dead vegetation on top with a little thatch that I am utilizing to keep soil moist. I combined methods of seeding after using the machine and seeding prior. I’ve seen a lot of discussion online about tilling prior to seeding. The general conclusion is DO NOT TILL. However, I will say this. If you have an itch to “till” because you want to condition soil for a seed bed, the overseeder did exactly that for me in the top inch or so of soil. Additionally, I’ll say it had almost a mulching effect on all the dead weeds and grass remaining from the burn. Time will tell if I did things correctly. I will update with results in a few weeks. Pictures are attached.

I have 4 impact sprinklers placed in a square arrangement in middle of yard. They are set on 360 degree rotation and hooked up to a Melnor water timer. My water pressure is only sufficient enough to run 1 at a time. I will be watering once in the morning around 9 a.m. for 3-5 minutes per sprinkler. Then once in the afternoon around 3 p.m. I will monitor the soil and if needed will add a third watering around noon.

Not sure what I can see with that picture. It’s too dark and taken too far away

Quite. It's possible that this is alien growth from the meteorite swarm last month. We just can't tell.

Okay here’s some pictures taken in daylight. I’m noticing some clovers popping up and growing, although I put tenacity down. Maybe I didn’t put a put a strong enough dose. At this point, I’ll have to just wait until the lawns established, then hit it with another dose. It’s very odd, as some of the grass seed has “super sprouted” and seemed to grow 3 inches over night while others are just starting to poke out of the ground. Starting to see green all around though. Rain is in the forecast Sunday through Thursday.

Re: Need opinions for methods on full reno
I just spent considerable effort redoing a 1/2 acre lawn - killed it off with glyphosate, box bladed, 1600lbs of limestone, 200lbs fertilizer, rototilled it, dropped almost 100lbs of seed and then used a drag harrow to get a small amount of soil on top of it. Along the way I spilled some seed on my gravel driveway.
Actually now it looks even better - like a putting green. I should have just thrown some seed on the old lawn and called it a day

It’s crazy how it grows so easily in the most undesirable areas. I had a nice strip growing beneath my steps from seed I spilled.olde_fart wrote: ↑October 5th, 2021, 8:06 pmI just spent considerable effort redoing a 1/2 acre lawn - killed it off with glyphosate, box bladed, 1600lbs of limestone, 200lbs fertilizer, rototilled it, dropped almost 100lbs of seed and then used a drag harrow to get a small amount of soil on top of it. Re: Need opinions for methods on full reno
Day 15. We’ve been getting major rainfall this past week. Flooding has occurred in the area. My lawn has loved it though! Grass is around 2 inches tall I’d say. Temps between 65-80 all next week. Question: Can I stop the daily watering and cut back to twice a week or so?
