Finding Urea in NJ
Hi all. I used to get urea from SiteOne here in NJ but they don't seem to have it. I can get it online but it is over $80 for 50 lb shipped. Anyone know a place in northern NJ that carries it?

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
Your best bet might be a trip to PA.
I have family in Pennsylvania and I normally pick it up at the local Amish feed mill when I visit. It goes for about $14 for a 50 pound bag.
Fwiw, the deadline to apply Nitogen fertilizer is about a month away (by law, you can’t apply after Nov. 15)

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
Thanks for the PA tip. The drive out there would negate the savings, however. I'm aware of the fall fert law but I don't put fert down on frozen ground. That would negate the purpose of winterizing. Lately I've been putting a small amount down weekly, but whatever the date is I don't put it down on frozen ground.turf_toes wrote: ↑October 16th, 2021, 11:47 amYour best bet might be a trip to PA.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
Huh. The ground here in Central Jersey rarely freezes until mid January. Heck, I’m still wearing shorts most weekends in November. My last cut is never earlier than mid December.
The only part of the state that has hard freezes by mid November is the upper northwest. Frost isn’t frozen ground.
If you live there, Pa would be a short ride. Probably easily worth the trip if you stock up for next season.
I don’t know of any part of the northern part of the state where you couldn’t get to PA on less than three gallons of gas. I can do it on two.
Urea in PA is roughly $14 for a 50 pound bag. You’ve cited $80 locally.
Buy enough for next year too and the math seems simpler.

Home Depot sells a 40 lb box online for about $34 w free shipping. I ordered one this week bc the price at Site One has sky rocketed for me here.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
You don't necessarily need pure urea (although that's often cheapest). Any high-nitrogen, low everything else fertilizer is just fine if the nitrogen is fast release.
35-0-5, 27-2-3, 25-0-3 (just example numbers, not actual bag numbers) would all be great. You'd just be looking for inexpensive feed where the first number is much higher than the other two. Although if the third one happens to be a little higher, I'd be OK with that (30-2-10). Potassium (the third number) can set off some snow mold issues during a bad winter, but how often do we get enough snow cover for that to be a problem? Exactly.
Choose an off-brand, they're all of equal quality by law. And the off brand will be cheaper because you won't be paying for advertising. It'll still be more than the urea, but easy to find and without the long trip.

Try Agway. It looks like there's quite a few in the Northern NJ area. I bought a #50 for around $20 at my local store in SE PA.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
Thanks YEM! Just found it on HD site. Surprised as hell that they have it. Just paid $36 and change with free delivery. It'll last me forever so I'm good with that!
Nobody else, including Agway, seems to have it, but I appreciate all the other comments. I still don't get email notification of responses for some reason.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
It sounds like you found what you need, but keep in mind that animal feed stores around here usually have "feed grade" urea @ $20 for 50 lbs. The fert grade is usually about $14. They are basically identical. I was surprised to find an animal feed store about 5 minutes from my house that doesn't advertise and I found them by accident. Nice people and reasonable prices for both balanced fertilizers and urea.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
*In Iowa here: I picked up some for $35/gab (50lbs) last week (even though their 2021 catalog says $20). I have to drive 35min to get it. There's a SiteOne only 20min away. I just called them to pick some up for my dad and they told me $55.41.
I'm so done with SiteOne. Last year my irrigation company sent me to SiteOne to get an RPZ valve. They told me it was $400. When I told them my irrigation company referred me, the price dropped to $200. They clearly don't want to deal with walk-ins. Looks like I always be driving 35min.

I just called the local ag feed / fertilizer elevator. They have bulk urea at $45/100lb - BYOB (bring your own bucket)!

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
I live in Iowa. Farmers are going to start drilling in anhydrous ammonia soon. It was on the news earlier this week that all high nitrogen fertilizers are in short supply and prices are up.
SiteOne is still highway robbery. They've lost my business.

Re: Finding Urea in NJ
I just picked up some from my local coop and it was 24.00 for a 50 lbs bag. They have another place nearby that sells bulk at .25 cents a pound but you have to buy it a ton at a time......
