Leaves dropping extremely fast this year

Post by Green » November 6th, 2022, 9:36 pm

Anyone else in adjacent or nearby states see about 75% of their leaves come down over the past week (or within a short period of time whenever that was in your area)? I think we are going to be at 90% very soon.

Also, it's not even the end of the first week of November. Usually, leaves drop mostly during the entire month of November here. Sometimes earlier. Sometimes a bit later. Sometimes a bit faster or slower.

If your leaves haven't dropped much yet, see what happens.

I don't ever recall seeing it happen so fast AND so early. I'm also not sure if it can be pinned down to any one weather variable in isolation.

I live in Central Massachusetts (Douglas) and I agree with you that the leaves have fallen very early this year. I have a tree or two that maybe have 10% - 20% of their leaves left, but the rest are bare. I have never experienced this in the 20+ years I have been living here. I suspect that the very dry summer caused this condition, but I am just speculating.

Mine are definitely down early but not complaining, I’m usually chasing them all year. I’ve also had about 16 truck loads of leaves dumped on my Sandy area, been a good year for mulching them up!

Green
Yes the leaves are pretty much all down in my neck of the woods.
What I noticed, on my morning walks, was a lot of the trees leaves quickly turned brown (on the tree) and dropped all at once.
Even my neighbor across the street, their huge Oak tree has been bare since last weekend.
Usually it's still dropping leaves at Thanksgiving and blowing in my yard.
I also wondered if it was due to the severe drought we had this summer.
Temps have been in the high 20's in the am and then warms up to almost 70 for the past week.
Some of Nicole's remnants coming through later today so temps will be up again.
Next week maybe rain mixed with snow.
I'm thinking of dropping my final fertilizer put the mowers to sleep.
Time to move the snowblower from the shed to the garage. (sigh)

Not exactly your neighbor, but leaves dropped quickly here in NE Indiana this year as well, especially compared to last year. I have a seasonal job at a golf course, and we usually wrap up for the year on or before Veteran's Day. That was the case this year, but also, the colors were spectacular, the best I've seen around here in many years. Also this year, trees were pretty much bare by last Wednesday. Last year, it seemed that the trees hung onto their leaves forever, and there wasn't nearly the color display as this year. It seemed that they went from green to brown, and hung onto the branches. We were still blowing leaves from the greens, tees and fairways onto the rough to be mulched on November 30th of `21

95% or so of our leaves are now down. And a lot of them were brown or dry this year.

The oaks seem to tease and hold on until December and then there is the Bradford Pear which hold until snow starts falling.

Some Oak trees hold onto lower leaves until April!

Yes, I noticed that all of my leaves tended to fall in the first 2 weeks of November this year, except for my Weeping Willow. It's still holding on, as usual. that will last until December if everything goes as it normally does. I'm just hoping for a warmish day during that time when I can mulch the leaves and put my tractor away for the winter.
