Home-made vole repellent longevity after significant rain?

Post by Green » January 23rd, 2023, 7:04 pm

This is my third year using Andy's Castor oil and dish soap vole repellent recipe (with my own additional ingredients added in last year--peppermint and hot pepper). No vole damage either year after having damage in the previous few years prior to using it.

The thing is, since I put down the repellent on Jan. 6th, we have gotten roughly 4.5 inches of rain (maybe up to 4.6), with even more expected soon.

The area is sloped.

The ground is currently not frozen, but will freeze soon (it actually froze lightly for several weeks before Christmas once already). So there isn't much time to figure out if it needs to be topped off.

Should the Castor oil be expected to withstahd 6+ inches (projected) of rain in the month following the application, and more after that? I know it can stand up to lots of snow. But often, the ground is frozen when we get lots of snow.

Thanks.

No idea. There is no harm in reapplying if the opportunity presents itself.

So far, it looks like most snow this year is short-lived, so I probably will not even bother. Actually, the ground is now frozen again after that 48 hour cold period and -8F temps the other night. Probably will thaw again in a week or two...
