All Crabgrass?

Post by PSU4ME » August 8th, 2023, 12:10 pm

Helping out a neighbor who seems to have a bunch of crabgrass around, some of which is responding to treatment. I’ve down a blanket of WBG and spot treated with Quinclorac and MSO. I know mature CG is hard to kill but I’m wanting to see if you all agree that both of these pics are CG.

Most folks are notoriously bad at identifying grassy weeds from pics. That said, crabgrass will die off itself in a few months. It’s an annual weed.

I suggest looking closer at the whole plant. Does it have underground rhizomes? Take a closer look at the above ground plant.

No one is going to have a better look at the features of that plant than you.

The photos are tough to evaluate, but something doesn't look right to me. My gut feeling and advice: see if you can rule out Dallisgrass/Field Paspalum/Bull Paspalum. These species have the V-shaped seedhead, and grow in tight upright bunches or flat mats, depending on the species. The don't root at nodes like crabgrass. A long-term neglected or minimal maintenance lawn is more likely to have these. They are fairly common in MA. I have seen them in person here, too. They are more challenging to get rid of than crabgrass if that is what you have mixed in..they're Perennial warm-season species.

I went over and pulled some of them up, they are thin roots vs rhizomes. Used some round up on other plants I know where not crabgrass. He just had his septic tank replaced and I nuked the whole area there as it was growing some nasty stuff. Will lay seed in 2-3 weeks
