Fall nitrogen and soil remediation

Post by Adam_M » September 30th, 2023, 3:38 pm

I'm about due to drop my next and final dose of 19-19-19 for the season and was pondering whether there's a benefit to spoon feeding to deliver the same amount of n as the aggressive fall program.

The product I have is 11.6% urea and the balance ammoniacal nitrogen.

I'd probably end up getting another 1/2 dose in spoon feeding per the program, but don't know how ammoniacal N responds vs. urea, and further don't know how hammering the soil with p and k will go.

What are the risks?

In my experience, late nitrogen seems to cause the tips of the grass to "frost burned" a bit more than usual. However, I think this is highly dependent on the weather. High winds, dry conditions, temps below 25°ish seem to be when it happens most for me. I believe that snow mold risk increases with late season P or K... forget which. However, I don't have much experience with extended snow cover on a lawn in my climate. If you can I'd grab a bag of Urea. Its cheap and you'll be ready for next season!

I ended up going the conservative route and put down the full dose a couple days ago.

Urea will go down around Thanksgiving if the weather is typical.
