Early treatment for Winter weeds

Post by PSU4ME » March 13th, 2024, 7:54 pm

Hi all, have a neighbor I helped with his lawn who has some green and flowering winter type weeds. Since they are growing and the temps are spring ish - is it ok to treat with an appropriate herbicide?

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes, but the herbicide will take noticeably longer to work in cooler temperatures. I've already sprayed some in my lawn and gardens, but I'm not really expecting them to die until April.

Thanks morph - I was expecting it to be slower but assumed since they were growing it had to work to an extent. Just saw some clover in my yard, weird winter/spring for sure.

Thank you!

Get them before they seed. Use Triclopyr ester instead of the amine formulation in cool weather. But as Morph said, nature ultimately dictates the speed of the kill. I started spraying glyphosate on spots just recently, but won't see results for a while.

"Before they seed" might be "next week" at this rate. My lawn is already greening up and starting to grow, which is a record.
