Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
To make myself feel a little better about the shipping cost, I bought two of the half-pound portions. They came in two separate shipments. The first shipment's packing list said that the other half-pound was backordered.
Edit -- I should add: I received the second half of my order just a few days later.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
In regards to Soil Moist, the directions say you are supposed to use 1lb per 100lb of seed. Is that a hard and fast rule? I would actually like to use it for a small section of my lawn where I would not be running the sprinklers (i.e. seeding relatively small spots that I would hand water only 2x per day). Therefore, can you just mix it in with a small amount of seeds or will that not work? In addition, is there any issues with dropping the seed thru drop spreader with soil moist on the seed (i.e does it clog up the spreader)? Thanks.

Depends on the kind of seeds. I find that for KBG more works better (about 1/2 lb per 5 gallon bucket worth).Pirate Russ wrote:In regards to Soil Moist, the directions say you are supposed to use 1lb per 100lb of seed. As I posted in another thread, if you put down way too much, you will have a jello-like substance on the surface that is very slippery when wet.

Neither of those choices will cause you problems.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
+1 to Andy. If you feel your irrigation is adequate to keep the seeds moist you could go with less. After doing this a number of times I think the advantage of soil moist, even in the presence of good irrigation, is the ability to water less (amount and frequency). This helps avoid puddling.slash8118 wrote:For 25 lbs of TTTF seed, should i use 1/2 lb or 1/4 lb ?

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
Well i broke down and got smoked for the $12 shipping . But the insurance of keeping my seeds more "moist" will help me sleep better at night. Lets see how this goes. I really hope this isn't a "gimmicky" product.
The old , order NOW for $19.99 and if you call in the next 15 min you can double your order free, for a ridiculous amount of postage and handling!
I wouldn't want them to "handle" my Soil Moist for that coin!

I haven't chimed in much, but it's definitely not gimmicky. I use TerraSorb in the pots on the deck and in the gardens, and it really does help hold water. A LOT of water. In that case, I barely water.
On the surface it'll dry faster, and it's not a magic product. You do have to water, but it means that if you accidentally miss an irrigation cycle it matters a lot less.

Does this stuff stick to the seeds when you mix it prior to rotary spreading? I just ordered some for my KBG reno.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
Yes, it does. I've used it at double-rate, just to make sure that a bit sticks to all seeds.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
Well, first time user here after reading this thread. I have Bewitched germination in 7 days. I have irrigation set to water 10 minutes at 10,12, 2, &4pm on the reno area. I don't think I have had an elite KBG seed germinate that fast in the past. Now, the germination is not widespread, but it has started on day 7. I also doubled the recommended rate.
I will say it's so hard to tell if this stuff actually coats the seed. after mixing for a few minutes, it's hard to tell a change in the seed appearance.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but Bewitched is a comparatively fast germinator for KBG, even without soil moist seed coat. Five to seven days for first germination of Bewitched KBG seems to be pretty common from prior renovations posted here. I first noticed germination from Bewitched at Day 7 in our 2015 renovation of our side lawn to a Bewitched monostand.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
I looked at your photos, looks similar to what i see now. I also have Award and Mazama in the mix, but added a little more from the Bewitched bag to my spreader before I spread it.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
Nice. In your earlier posting, you mentioned that you have Bewitched germination. If you seeded a blend with Award and Mazama, how do you know it was the Bewitched germinated? Do you also have some areas in which you seeded each of the three varieties by themselves?
By the way, I just noticed that last night jskierko posted that he just had Bewitched germination on Day 5.

Re: Opinions on SoilMoist Seed Coat
The section that germinated first was an area under a tree that gets some morning sun and evening sun. That was exclusively Bewitched. My mix with Bewitched is also starting to come in at day 10. Cannot conclude which cultivar it is though. It's under a fiber seed blanket.
