UREA APPLICATION - CHARLOTTE, NC?

Post by ojtwelve » October 31st, 2011, 2:04 pm

Hello,

I have been reading the forum and see alot of people are going to apply Urea this month before the ground freezes to establish strong root grown in their grass. I am living in Charlotte, NC should I be doing the same UREA application on my Tall Fescue lawn? If so at what time/month? I have access to Urea 46-0-0 for $17.

Also when would I apply SBM - during the winter, spring, summer or fall fertilization?

Thanks.

OJ

Urea is more of a fall and right before winter fertilizer. The reason I say that is because it is harder to get nitrogen burn from over applying.

Urea is a fast release nitrogen. Without getting sciencetific its all at once. So if you put down 2 lbs that would equal 1 lb of nitrogen all at once.

During the fall once the weather starts getting cold and you are moving into winter mode. The grass hits a point where its storing carbs for winter. The lawn hits a point where all top growth stops. Around that time you have about a week to put down 1 lb of nitrogen that gets stored for a fast green up in spring time.

That sounds about right.

Fall is the time when I smash mine with nitrogen (organic, mostly) starting in August as it takes some weeks to become available to the lawn. The last major drop is October, with a modest drop in November. I'm not shy about using a synthetic if I have a specific goal, as I did this year--recover from a summer's worth of drowning.

For you, those dates will be somewhat shifted backward, probably 2 weeks or so. Not that, with organics like SBM, there's any particular limit on the timing.

So overall, spring is light to moderate fertilization, summer is moderate (organically!), fall is heavy, and the last step is winterization (usually Thanksgiving or so for me). Synthetics only come into play from September to November.

Some guys I have talked to say that CLT is slowly becoming a warm season grass area. I live just south of CLT and quit often we miss the storms/snow/cold that just north of the city might get.

My guesstimate is mid to late December.

I'm in Charlotte also. Where do you find urea around here?

My winterization consists of 2lbs of urea per thousand square feet of grass. Apply, after the grass has completely stopped growing.

This application follows the “fall nitrogen regimen” article available below. Read the LateFall/Winterizing section at the bottom of the article.

I haven't lived in CLT area for a few years now, but I recall "Farmers exchange".
