amine vs ester

Post by Hammbone » March 20th, 2012, 5:37 pm

What's the difference between amine herbicides and ester herbicides?
What are the pros/cons between the two?

For example; "Cool Power" contains MCPA , Triclopyr and Dicamba and is an ester. "Horsepower" contains the same 3 ingredients but is considered an amine.

Ester is used when the weather is cooler, and is more expensive, but in my opinion better. Amine can be used in warmer weather, but doesnt quite burn down weeds as fast, and a little cheaper than ester. Both are good, but both have specific advantages depending on the conditions. I would spray ester now over amine. Come warmer weather reverse it.

Or, more chemically speaking, an ester is an organic salt (I've always wondered if Lot's wife was named...er, Esther...)

An amine is an ammonia derivative. One of the hydrogens is knocked and replaced by the new chemical group.

Esthers, because of the salt, shouldn't be used in warm weather. Amines, because of the nitrogen/ammonia, shouldn't be used in hot weather. Usually any bottle warns not to apply at temperatures much over 85.

Bad, very bad.

We've devolved to chemistry jokes?
Na.

The optimist sees the glass half full.
The pessimist sees the glass half empty.
The chemist see the glass completely full, half in the liquid state and half in the vapor state.

Charlie was a chemist,
But Charlie is no more.
What Charlie thought was H2O,
Was H2SO4.

Two atoms walk into a bar. One exclaims, "Darn! I just lost an electron!"
"Are you sure?"
"I'm positive!"
