Sunday Aug 23

I aerated the crap out of the lawn today. That machine really kicks the crap out of you!!!. As I said before, I really wanted to break up the dead layer that was sitting on top of my soil so I made MULTIPLE passes.

Nice job, Dave!!! I shared your pain today, dragging a slit-seeder all over the place in the mud. I had unexpected help from my boys, who I think were afraid that they'd find stupid ol' Dad face down in his beloved soil.

Where are we meeting for a beer?

Tuesday 8/25

Seed and fertilizer is down. Sprinklers are going as I type this. I have done my work. It's all up to the powers that be.

I actually have to seed about 300 sq ft of FF but I will do that on Saturday.

Congrats, Dave!! It feels really good when all that prep work is done and the seed goes down, doesn't it? Make sure to keep up on the Dihydrogen Monoxide treatments. Hopefully my prayers for "no monsoons" will cover the Island as well as the Hudson Valley.

Just checked, no germination yet. In the last 3 weeks I drank 3 5 gallon Poland Springs water bottles while working on the lawn.

If you can't find Dihydrogen Monoxide, then use Hydrogen Hydroxide - it's an acceptable substitute.

Not yet. My pH is low and the peat won't help that. I may just do it later today. Thoughts??????

Also,

How much peat do you put down? I don't want to block the sun.

No more than 1/4"

Don't worry. Grass seeds, unlike lettuce and impatiens, do not require light for germination. Once germinated, grass blades require sunlight for photosynthesis.

dave,

with the rain coming it might make sense to get something to put over the seedbed (burlap, seed blankets, etc.). Since its only been a few days there can't be much in the way of germination. 2-3 inches of rain could really do a number (depending on your slope and drainage). If you have a very flat yard and don't see much in the way of rivers during thunderstorms you might be ok. a couple of rolls of burlap and some stakes couldn't hurt.

My lawn is very flat. I am not worried about the seeds running off, I am more worried about them rotting from too much water. I did aerate the hell out of the lawn and it is very soft so I should have good water seepage into the ground.

I guess the peat at this point would absorb a lot of the water?

They won't rot because of a lot of rain in a short period of time. If they are puddled for days you'll lose them.

At this point we are going to get waaaaaaaaay tooo much rain for a layer of Peat; somwhere between 2 and 4 inches over the next 24 hours. We've already gotten .25 inches up here in Roslyn today.

Good luck, this is going to be interesting. Last weekend I had a roof leak that caused major water damage, just got it fixed today.

Don't be nervous; Long Island is warmer than you are. :-)
