from seed last Mid April

Post by s1mpl3k1d » August 15th, 2009, 12:32 am

Just an fyi. I am amazed how drought tolerant this grass is. I put down the seeds mid to late April this year. I have many areas with no grass due to RU last year. I killed the weeds so it also killed the grass. :P

Anyways, the only time I watered the grass was the first 10 days. After that, I forgot about it. You will notice that my existing lawn is almost dormant.

Here is a shot I took August 12.

Congrats. Its looking good.

My experience with fescue, which yours seems to be mostly, is that it gets even more drought tolerant in year 2 and 3 as the roots have a chance to go deeper.

Thanks for the info and hope you continue to have good results.

You're welcome. In front, I'll be seeding pure elite KBG seeds in few minutes. However, I won't do what I did with that fescue, not watering it.

And yes, it's very drought tolerant although the looks are so spikey. I'll take closer shots of them.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't dropped the seeds yet. The soil preparation which includes core aeration and light raking is taking a lot of time. I'm only half way done. :( I feel like not manually raking it anymore plus the 105F heat being produced by direct sun. :(

If it's 105° outside, then I'm extremely happy you haven't dropped the seeds yet.
Get out of that heat and go have a beer and dinner with your family.
And don't think about seeding until the temp has dropped outside at least 25 degrees.
That should be in the next week or so.

Hi Mallory,

I dropped the seeds an hour ago. It was already late afternoon. I just finished installing all the sprinklers. In fact, one sprinkler valve just turned on. :D I am so so so tired. :(

Also, looks like I removed too much dead grass. Even if I rolled the seeds, I can easily see the seeds on top of the dirt. Will they be fine? I can 99% say for sure that seeds had very good contact with the soil.

Are you going to putting down any topdressing, e.g. peat moss ?

I did a little however I ran out. I'm on concerned on the north side since it's more downslope or whatever they call it.

I might be wrong, but I think the important consideration is that the seeds are touching the soil.

I don't doubt for a moment you are doing a good job on your renovation, Ron. So I'm sure the seeds have good contact. My concern was the time and amount of water it will cost you to keep the seeds moist in such extreme temps. If it's still that hot outside, then please stay keenly aware of their condition. Irrigate at least 3 times a day for 5-10 minutes each if you have a sprinkler system or 15-20 minutes each if not.

Good morning Mallory,

I am lucky because the forecast is that it will rain for 1 week. Day 2 rained. Now am on day 3 and the drizzle(ing) is awesome. Very slow but it's been drizzling since early morning and it's still drizzling. :) I remember I saw the kbg seeds germinated within 5 days but that's in a damp paper towel. Hopefully, it should be the same. :)
