Neighbor cut his Bradford Pear Tree..Whoo hoo

Post by Sidney » June 19th, 2014, 8:42 pm

My neighbor finally cut his Bradford Pear Tree down. It was causing too much shade for my bermuda to grow. Now, I will have 100% coverage in my front yard.

You can see the tree in the pic below. Obviously it is the one towards the right of the picture.

He got permission first from the HOA. They were more willing to let him cut it because he planted it. He just didn't know it would get so tall. He said he did it for me so my grass would grow. I never complained to him about it but I guess he's just that great of a neighbor.

I have a huge Peeling Bark Birch that I want to cut down. I just don't think they will let me do it. If that tree comes down, it will give our street a different look for sure.

Great news and you are lucky you have a good neighbor. I know many people that have problems due to neighboring trees for which they have no control or ability to remove.

"1) STAHP. Stop planting these weak, crappy trees. Plant a fruit bearing pear or another spring blooming tree (Redbuds, deciduous Magnolias, Flowering Cherries, etc) instead.

2) Join the Bradford Pear Eradication Society (BPES). What does it take to become a member? A lifelong devotion to removing Bradford Pears (along with their genetic kin) and spreading the word of better, stronger trees. Also, if anyone is feeling particularly artistic and would like to design a logo or just doodle about tree smashing, I would love to see what you’ve got up your sleeves! "

I have a bradford pear in my front lawn and haven't had any of the issues and didn't know it was such a hated tree? My tree is only 8 years old but is getting quite big and I have trimmed it so that I am able to walk underneath it without hitting my head.

Everybody hates it because it has a tendency to produce a really weak tree structure. You have to be really on top of pruning to eliminate the small angle branches and any branches competing with your central leader. I have two bradfords and I really like the white blossoms in the spring. Hopefully I can keep them well pruned as to not have issues.
