Bermuda Shortage

Post by wrager » June 20th, 2014, 8:56 am

I guess the SOD farms around ATL were also negatively impacted by the harsh winter. I can't find a pallet anywhere. One farm said they were on allotment until July 3...could only cut so much. Even the landscape supply places wil get a few pallets and sell out within hours.

Definitely a shortage. I work in the landscape industry and we used to be able to order a truckload in the afternoon and have it delivered the next morning. Now the price is 2-3 times what it was 2 years ago and it's about a 10-14 day lead time. Met with one of the larger sod suppliers in the area last week and they said they have enough orders to easily ship 3 times what they do each day but they would be out of sod in no time. Unfortunately it's not just the harsh winter that has caused this. Bad weather, construction picking up again, and one of the larger sod farms closing up shop due to the recession.

if your in spring.... go up 249 past tomball. halfway to magnolia there is a small grass place on the side of the road next to Rinn Tire and wheel. Cant miss it.

before i left for work he had 2 pallets of common sitting there. i almost scooped one of them up just for the low spots in my yard!

Definitely regional. The southeast (TN, GA, AL, and NC for sure) had a very rough winter, lots of winter kill. Corporate clients and golf courses have gotten the first dibs, the lowly homeowner is far down the totem pole...

Next year should hopefully be better assuming we have a normal winter!

It is an excellent year for all sod farms east of the Rockies and south of Interstate 64/40 due to record cold winter. Demand and prices are way up. The family sod farm back in TX is pretty much done already for the year.

I haven't needed more than a truck or 2 at a time but I have had no problems yet here.
