How to kill Sedge and Kyllinga on St.Augustine

Post by Tony alony » October 4th, 2014, 11:33 am

I tried to spot spray Sedgehammer + . Don't know if it really worked because I waited the recommended 3 day period before mowing. Now it's back and more widespread. Should I try a blanket spray or use a different product.? I don't want to use atrazine because I read that it's bad for tree roots and the environment if it reaches the water table. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks

Thanks for the advice Sixohh. I know Celsius does kill most if not all weeds. I just can't justify the cost though. I don't have a large enough lawn to spend that kind of money. I'm going to keep using the SedgeHammer to see if it can really work on these weeds. I'll just keep spot spraying until it becomes too much to handle, then, and only then, would I consider purchasing Celsius.

Nutgrass is a pain, I have some I deal with. You may know this, I found out after talking to several ppl. There are two types of nutgrass yellow and purple, the yellow can be killed with image I broadcast sprayed my yard last June and it did a decent job, maybe you have the yellow and the sedgehammer may not work on it. Just my 2 cents

Certainty and Celsius

Post by dfw_pilot » October 6th, 2014, 11:38 am

FYI,

Neither Kyllinga nor Nutsedge is listed on the Celsius label as weeds it will kill. (My yard has both those weeds after my Celsius application.) Don't spend your money on it if that is what you are trying to kill. Certainty will kill both Kyllinga and Nutsedge, for about the same price as Celsius and can be used under the same temperatures. Buy both and mix them for the best control. Small lawn or don't want to invest in it? Just wait until a good rain or irrigation and pull it by hand. Good luck!

Thanks LockTurf for the tip about Image. Further research revealed that Sedgehammer requires 3 treatments. Here's a link: (see page#5): http://www4.ncsu.edu/~jcneal/AGI-195/AG ... %20B&W.pdf
Funny thing is, I did quite a bit of research on the effectiveness of SedgeHammer and no where, except the document above ever mentioned 3 treatments. I'll give it one more shot with the SedgeHammer. After that, I dunno?.... Treatment #3?
Thanks again for the heads-up on Image.

Thanks dfw_pilot. Buy both?? Holy Cow, I'm living on retirement income and in order to buy both, I'd have to give up my adult beverages. That's an important part of lawn care.... rehydration!

You could always try painting the leaves with Round-Up so you wouldn't hurt you SA.

I had tons of purple nutsedge earlier this year and image took care of almost all of it. I sprayed a big area the first time and what it didn't get I spot sprayed. It does take a few days to start showing that it is killing them. Plus it's available at big box stores.

Alan, thanks for taking the time to inform me of
a good solution. I picked up some Ortho Nutsedge Killer today and immediately put it down. Hope it works as intended. Sure couldn't beat the price!

Thanks immensely. I bought three 32oz bottles at that price.

Thanks also to MightyQuinn and SACole for good solutions as well. Obviously, you both know that sedge is a tough weed to get rid of. I'll try one of your suggestions as a backup. I'm not convinced this is a once-and-done weed. At least I'll be prepared for next year , should I need another mode of attack.

Thanks, guys.

Just an FYI - I've had great results with this ortho hose end nutgrass killer. Works very well on nutgrass and kyllinga in my bermuda yard. Just remember that these weeds are almost impossible to eradicate completely, so several applications over the course of the summer will be necessary. I think it works better than sedgehammer, and the 32 oz bottle will cover much more lawn for the money!

mdmike, you're right. I also think the ortho looks as though it might injure this weed. Everywhere I sprayed the sedge had turned brown and wilted after day #3. Unfortunately, I had to mow today, so I hope I haven't altered the kill by cutting off some of the above ground growth of the weed.
I guess I can wait a few more days to see the outcome.
Thanks again to Alan, my nearby neighbor. I probably would have stayed with the expensive Sedgehammer and been extremely disappointed. So far, so good; +1 Ortho & -1 Sedge.
At least some injury occurred.

Ummmm, don't score the round yet. Sedge is insidious, and just when you're oh-so-proud, you hear "I-M B-A-C-K".

Yeah you're always right Andy. Just when you think you've found something that works better on your lawn-(the results that no one else can achieve)..... KaPoww! Here comes another weed!
I've given up battling Bermuda, I hope this isn't another weed I'll have to learn to accept!
Daunting, to say the least.
