Well, that's nice! Did you apply any pre-e? Or was this pure blockage from Paspalum?

I think a combo of a few things.Redtenchu wrote:Well, that's nice! Did you apply any pre-e? Or was this pure blockage from Paspalum?
1)I did an excellent job preparing the area before sodding last year. Roundup, water, roundup, water, roundup, renovate. This was thanks to the suggestions of several members here.
2) applied Prodiamine
3) Exactly what you said. The turf is like an absolute woven mat keeping that nasty stuff out.
I'm very anxious to see how to Prodiamine handles Nutsedge. That was really the only weed I had in the turf last season. I didn't have an outbreak, but it was spread out randomly. I had to spray it multiple times to achieve control.

Joe'sCentipede wrote:Pre-emergent herbicides that we use against weeds and grasses usually act in some way to defeat the new sprouts from the seeds. While yellow nutsedge does sprout from seed, it may also be coming from tubers/nutlets underground. The systemic herbicides like Tenacity, Image, Sedgehammer, and Roundup applied while it's growing move down the leaves into the tubers and roots to kill them all this season. Both the Image and Sedgehammer labels specifically say that repeat applications may be necessary for extended control.
I can't find the link anymore, but I ran into a study on yellow and purple nutsedge and each of them were able to expand from a single plant over a radius of something like 10' in a single season!

It's starting to look amazing though. I went to see the Astro's last yr in the playoffs and there field looked absolutely amazing. I want it just from the dew factor. Our mornings around here is so hot & humid and wet from the dew you would think it's been raining all night.

It won't be long. Going to aerate, verticut, topdress, fertilize. Will see if that is the way to go for next year.
Planning on doing this in 2 weeks.

Tomorrow morning punching holes, slicing, and topdressing.
Ammendments planned:
Gypsum @10 lbs/k broomed into holes
K Mag @ 5/k
Topdressing sand
Calcium Nitrate Foliar @1/k
Should see a quick response and be back soon with a success report.

Re: Paspalum (Seashore)(Paspalum Vaginatum)
In other meandering thoughts, turf always looks so bad after a verticut. I opted to forego the sand top dressing until recovery from core aerating and slicing. I think from a management stand point it's the right decision considering my turf just recovered from a disease outbreak. Consdering the already sandy nature of my soil, the verticutting actually filled back in most of the holes from aerating. Very excited about the next couple weeks watching the grass rebound and explode with color. Between vertcutting and aerating the 1300 sq ft in the front yard, I ended up with about a wheelbarrow full of cores/stolons. These are being rolled into bare areas in the back yard which will eventually become my testing area/green/futbol practice zone.
I have decided to follow up with another light verticut in 3 weeks and go after top dressing at that time.
Too much rain in the area today to spray Calcium Nitrate for recovery since it's easily leached

Great work SG311!
How did you remove all the trash after coring/ verticutting?
Did you mow afterwards?

I used a regular rake for all the stolons,SimonR wrote:Great work SG311!

I found the flat side of a wide landscaping rake to very effectively drag the cores out.
I mowed after cleaning up the cores, then verticut, collected stolons, and mowed again.

Looking Great, what is your HOC? Do you have a generic schedule you plan to follow this year (I know plans can change quickly).

Currently at .6
I do want to drop it down lower, but not sure when I will. Whatever HOC I end June with will most likely be where it stays.
