Grass looking funky....

Post by ajmikola » October 9th, 2016, 8:52 am

I've stopped mowing for the year. I put down 34-0-0 and dimension. Large swaths of grass looking fairly thin and bare.
We are in a serious drought, no rain in 3-4 weeks. I'm watering by hand at this point, so i'm fairly sure its not dry.
What says ya'll?

Considering the areas of concern are all along the high side of the lawn I would say the water is running down the hill before it can penetrate to the root zone.

You could terrace the hill and make 2 flat mowing areas!

Something like this perhaps?
That looks like a 10-20k$ project.

Yes - it works much better than stacked tuna, especially in July.

At least it would fertilize the grass

At least the wife wouldn't complain about the smell of Milorganite anymore? :)

But, yes that is what I had in mind.(the stone wall not the fish wall :) )

Would a soaker hose left on the lawn overnight help? Just an idea...
Check your water meter reading before you start and at daybreak to see how many gallons went down.
Just an idea, it might help....

Haha. Speaking of my wife, i'm going to post a text she sent me after i showed her a pic of the wall. She would cut my balls off if she new i was posting this but oh well.
I'm sure everyone can relate to this

From my wife: cut and pasted.

Well fine blow up the yard burn the house down. Spend a million dollars on the grass while we have to be poor in our old age because all our money went into GRASS. Thank God we have a beautiful lawn that makes everything in our lives just perfect

Be sure to remind the wife that your lawn addiction is better than investing in acreage in Kansas so you can hunt deer. Not bringing home a trophy from a hunting trip can arouse suspicion quicker than spending too much money on the lawn. :rotfl:

Well, I'm going to assume that you have an irrigation system (you may not since you said you are "hand watering"). If so, I would replace any spray heads on the top of that hill with drip-line irrigation like http://www.sprinklerwarehouse.com/Rain- ... 12-100.htm.

If you don't have an irrigation system, then a soaker hose placed at the top of that slope at the edge of the sidewalk is probably your best bet for keeping that area happy.

I use to get the same crap from my wife but then she started getting compliments on the lawn and saw it as a sense of pride. She even became a member here :). She doesn't post that often. Just give it some time and I'm sure she'll come around.

+1 what Tony said. You could have a lot worse vices than taking care of the lawn. You already have most of the expensive stuff out of the way.

Mowing taller would fix all of that.

I keed, I keed :)

Seriously, though, it would help to keep the entire lawn the same color. But, that slope is always going to be a problem for growing grass. There are lots of tricks and such you can try (like mowing higher, aerating the top of the slope more, using wetting agents, using soil amendments, irrigating differently), but I think you'll always be wrestling with that slope.

Over the years, I've taken the attitude that some things aren't worth fighting. If grass on that slope will never look the way you want it to, why fight it? That looks like it might be a cool spot for a planting bed of some type.

Have you tried blsc? Or even White Rain shampoo? Something to help the soil retain more water up top.

Try this....http://aroundtheyard.com/soil/soil-cond ... ain#p57256
I've sprayed 3oz-4oz/k every other week 3 times then monthly 3 times. It works.
