New Home, New Bermuda Sod, Weeds Already

Post by greenc51 » February 19th, 2017, 12:34 am

So my fiance and I just bought a new home. And with the new home comes a newly sodded yard. Keep in mind we are in Atlanta in February with Spring fast approaching. Temps are in the 30s-40s at night and 50s-60s during the day...this week coming it will be in the low 70s.
As soon as we closed on the home and moved in, this one weed started popping up through the dormant sod EVERYWHERE in the front yard. What is this and will my tank sprayer full of WBG take it out? Also, I'd like to keep the use of chemicals down to a minimum as I have some edibles soon to be planted in the backyard and I also want to be a friend to the bee. As organic as possible is my saying :)

Thanks all

Rock-and-hard-place time...

The weed is a grassy weed, and that's as far as I'm willing to go (ID'ing from pictures isn't accurate). WBG will have absolutely no effect upon the weeds - it's for broadleaf weeds only.

While Bermuda is completely dormant, the weeds could be hit with RoundUp without harm to the Bermuda, but if the Bermuda even slightly comes out of dormancy during the treatment, it's a massive problem.

There is nothing organic and harmless that is going to deal effectively with those grassy weeds, unless your organic definition includes a willingness to dig each one out by hand...

Looks like I see a couple bermuda blades starting to green up. I'd be hesitant to hit it with glyphosate. Unless you want to spend the time painting the weed's leaves with it, but if you're going to do that it would be quicker to just hand pull them all.

Hmmm rock and a hard place indeed. I may just bend down and pull them up as I see them whenever I'm in the yard and have time.

I would just pull them. If they have rhizomes it will need more attention with the triangle approach.

Looks like Orchardgrass, real brute of a weed. Dig it out and do not let it spread seeds.

No chance that bermuda is dormant enough in Atlanta for glyphosate. I'm with the others, spend a cpl hours pulling them. I've collected a cpl 5 gal bucketso of poa the last few weeks

I have identified this stuff in my yard as quackgrass.
