Lawn renovation Yukon Bermuda

Post by tellycoleman » April 9th, 2017, 11:25 pm

I have been debating as to what type of Bermuda grass I am going to have in my yard. Moved into my dream house Sept last year and decided to do nothing until spring.
Back ground
1.6 acre lot 25,000 square feet around the house. The contractor spread cheap contractor cool season grass and So So much hay and straw you could feed a horse. I do have an irrigation system that I am currently adjusting the heads to get adequate coverage. I was not really trying to do the entire 25, 000 square feet all at once because it would be prohibitively expensive. So I decided to do front yard 10,000 and side yard 4,000 sq ft . I moved from a house that had only a 600 square ft patch of grass . So I literally have no lawn equipment.

Problems

I had an initial extreme infestation of Glyphosate Resistant Dallisgrass. My neighbors had it bad as well.
I initially purchased 2 soil savy soil test before discovering this forum.

Decision
After much debate I decided to go with Yukon Bermuda grass because of its cold tolerance and slower vertical growth.

I just received 3 item in the mail
1) Yukon seed from Hancock farms (very quick)
2) Earthway s25 liquid spreader
3) Soil logic liquid gypsum

My Plan
Use my earthway sprayer to broadcast weed killer over my existing lawn
Manually remove all this Darn Hay and Straw
Broadcast liquid gypsum ( I have soidic soil)
Level my Lawn with organic topsoil
Plant in a few weeks when temps get a little warmer. (Still have a few high 30 degree night time temp)

All Advice will be gladly accepted
Pictures will be posted

Update

This Friday I used my Earthway s25 to sprayer to KILL it.

How I applied

Home depot 2.5 gallon of 41% glyphosate
directions said use 2.5 ounces per Gallon which will treat about 300 square feet
Doing math thats 10 gallons of water and 25oz of glyphosate per 3000 square feet
Thats 12.5 Oz and 5 gallon water per 1500. I rounded down for overspray and that the sprayer will leave about 1/2 gallon in the sprayer so one tank full 5 gallons per 1000 square feet.
Its been 3 days and my grass isn't happy. I may have to reaply because some spots are still green. Most are yellowing.
Eathway S25 sprayer tip is the course tip.

Next step getting all the rocks and dead grass and Hay outta there

I wonder if a few weeks is long enough between the glyphosate kill and seeding?

If it's standard (not long-lasting) Roundup, he should be fine. But the final word should be to read the label.

I would look at some other renovations using seed. May need to do two rounds of round-up and once everything is dead i would probably use a harley rake instead of a tiller. I would also wait until night time temps are much higher say 50-60's

You might also look into someone in your area doing hydro-mulch - ask them to use your yukon seed in the mix...using that method should have some decent results.

Ok it is 10 days post Glyphosate treatment.
It was a great success
Everything is DEAD as a doorknob
Question
Since I only did one round of glyphosate
Do i wait for new growth then blast the yard again with Roundup??
Or do you thing I am good to just Harley Rake and apply topsoil???

Thanks

I'm sure someone with more experience than I will chime in but if it were myself, I would wait another 1-2 weeks for new growth. If it comes, hit it with a second application of Roundup. If very little or nothing is appearing, rake, topsoil, and seed away. Nothing beats good prep.

Nice job so far!

I agree with waiting a week or two for more weeds to germinate. Make sure you water if you're not getting rain to help that happen. Blast them with RoundUp and then go from there.

I would scalp the dead stuff, Harley rake and apply topsoil, level, roll, water, kill anything green, and keep at it until any weed seeds in that top 1/2" are gone. Last thing you want are weeds overgrowing your Bermuda and shading it out.

ok so I should wait 2-3 weeks after i harley rake and topsoil. I should round up water and wait and repeat going round up crazy every week or so?
I am so glad I decided not to Harley rake this weekend. in the last 12 hours we got 3.7 inches of rain. would have been a huge mess.

I will scalp this week once the yard dries out.

Update 3- may - 2016

Post by tellycoleman » May 3rd, 2017, 2:20 pm

Another update.
Well its been over 2 weeks since my Glyphosate application. Barely any weeds have grown despite me watering religiously. So much so that i had to check the bottle of home depot Gly to make sure it didnt have a pre emergent.
Nope just concentrated gly
today I Had a guy come and Harley rake and added 18 yards of topsoil. I have to goto work (Sad) so tomorrow I will go back and smooth the yard with a couple of 2 by 4s and and a rope.
pictures to come
Question?
1) Should I plant this weekend ? Daytime temps Starting Sunday in the low 80's
or wait and see what comes up and hit it with glyphosate again?

2)Do I roll the yard before and After seeding?

3)Do i need to cover the seed in peat moss ( Costly for the large area) or just rake roll and water?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Does not matter what daytime temps are.... you need to check the temp of the soil 4" deep with a thermometer. Bermuda seed germinates when soil temps are 65 degrees and above with constant moisture. Don't get in a rush... have had record temps in the 90 here in Lubbock, TX but just check my soil temps this morning and I am still at 59 degrees.

Patients young grasshopper!! you will have better luck with your project if you measuring the soil temps, and I suggest it would be better if you wait longer than try and rush things. I think you will be happier in the long run if you do
