Help me identify and get rid of this weed.

I am working hard to rehab my tif 419. I have this weed that has very long runners invading one corner of my lawn. What is it and do I pull it, or use 2-4D and spray it?

Looks like St. Augustine grass. Most homes in the Houston area have it and I'll bet your neighbor has it too. I've never tried to selectively kill it but look for an herbicide that's safe for bermuda but not st. aug

That for sure is SA. Just pulled the runners and mow low. If your neighbor has SA then you need to create a barrier down the line. Thats what I had to do. Good luck.

St Aug will dominate over bermuda, so you need to get it out. It is sensitive to the 2,4-d class of herbicides, so that's another way to get rid of it. You can also get rid of it by stopping all watering until it becomes a golden color. Then still don't water until it becomes more of a gray. In Houston you are likely to get rain often enough to keep it alive.

Even a metal landscaping barrier will keep it out. It only spreads over the surface of the soil.

I had/have the same thing, SA encroaching from neighbors. Impractical in my case for a hard barrier, but Spectracide Weedstop with Crabgrass Killer puts the whammy on it for sure. I'd let it replace my Bermuda but figure I'd be dead and gone before that happened.....

St Aug can spread 15 feet a year, but it won't be dense that first year. The second year you will have the 15 feet filled in densely and another 15 feet outwards from that. So it spreads and fills at the same time.
