Bermuda Grass/Zoysia in the upper Transition Zone

Post by Monkburger » July 2nd, 2017, 8:16 pm

Has anyone had experience with growing/maintaining Bermuda/Zoysia in the upper parts of the Transition Zone, say NoVA (Northern Virginia, Winchester area)? Or even people out in the Midwest in the same general area.

If so - what's your thoughts on it? I planted some Yukon and Riviera in some pots and the color right now is much better than my cool season grasses. (Yukon is growing well, Riviera hasn't germinated yet)

First frost date is usually the second week of October, and the last is usually Sometime in April, according to NOAA.

You need to look at canairb's pictures of his lawn.

Warmer parts of Zone 6B (I'm in 6B as well) are supposed to be the very furthest North where anyone should even attempt planting Bermuda in its present form. I read that in an article. Years ago, no one would've attempted it even in 7A, but they've been working on the Winter hardiness aspects in the newest cultivars the last few decades.

Go with patriot Bermuda. For the most part, everywhere my daughter plays in VA/MD are transitioning their fields to patriot. It has a really strong recovery rate, early greenup, and decent frost tolerance.

Cut it at 3/4"-1", give it irrigation, nitrogen once a month, and plant growth regulator. Cutting once a week and the grass is unbelievably happy. I'm currently watering 1/4" every morning, with a deep watering cycle once a week. My soil is heavy clay though

Current picture, a little lighter than usual, needs a kick of iron:

Holy smokes thats a NICE lawn. This thread is timely, I have a 700sf backyard (kbg) that I was either going to overseed with some TTTF or do something riskier and put down a warm season grass. I have some questions and will ask them on your thread, but glad to see your having good success!

We live in Hagerstown, MD. on PA & WV line. New construction in '06 with MD cert Sod. In summer of '07 plugged in Meyer Zoysia into the sod. I don't recall how long it took but it has spread and covered ours and our neighbors yards on both sides (with their blessings) We have postage stamp sized yards.
These pics are from 2013/14?
