Thin turf around tree root structure

Post by craving77494 » July 29th, 2017, 3:28 pm

I may be grasping at straws here.....

I have 2 smaller oak trees in the front yard. I would love to remove them but the HOA would have none of that. The tree on the right has some shallow roots moving across the lawn. There is grass, and I keep it cut short (1-1/4”) but would like it to thicken up if possible.

Would adding fertilizer or additional watering in this area help?

Ignore the yellow spots, those are from a pole saw and a different post

Not a direct answer, but the HOA shouldn't require you to keep so many trees so close together in such a small space. It's not healthy for any of them. At the very least, the smaller oak in the center of the photo should be removed, otherwise the crape myrtle is going to suffer. Crape myrtles can get huge (unless a compact cultivar) and should be allowed to do so, and they require full sun. Heck, that appears to be another crape myrtle peeking out in the bottom right of the photo. Is that one not being completely shaded by the larger oak?

What kind of oaks?

Wow - those oaks are going to dominate that lawn in 10 years. Can you yank and replace them with something smaller and more ornamental?

It won't get better in the future - you'll have two huge trees taking all the water and sun.
