Help identify these weeds

Post by gibby13 » March 6th, 2018, 12:07 pm

I have centipede and put down my pre-m on Feb 25th. I had a couple weeds already coming up, but now they have exploded. What are these and how should I treat them?

Thanks!

Pre-M apps this time of year only help with warm weather weeds. This looks like ryegrass, atleast the 2nd and bottom pic does. A fall application of Pre-m will help with this.

I wouldn't worry about it, once it starts warming up, it will die. There are fairly easy to pull by hand though. Atrazine has a limited affect on it, could also try Vantage but it can be hard to find. I use Vantage on my grassy weeds in my centipede.

Look like some young spurge in the top pic maybe.

Thanks.

The one in the first picture is all over in my front yard and it is mostly under the centipede that is already turning green, so I think it would be hard to pull. We had a good week of 50+ degree soil temps but today it is down in the 30's for soil temps.

The larger clumps are almost 8" tall, I was going to pull them, but want to experiment to see if any chems will kill them.

I went ahead and ordered some celsius and MSM since I was out and plan on spot spraying with it.

1 more note. I thought I didn't put down Pre-Em in the fall, but I just look at my spreadsheet and I put some down on 9/17/2017. However, I didn't write down what kind I used... ;(

I'm no southern expert, but compare the first picture to photos of Chamberbitter and Mimosa varieties.

Nah, for that one I'd start with common vetch.

So I spotted sprayed Celsius spiked with MSM on the 14th. I noticed about a half dozen different types of weeds all through the yard, much worse than I originally thought. Whatever is in the first picture is already starting to turn yellow and brown. Going to do a blanket app of Celsius spiked with MSM on the 28.

I wish I would have wrote down which pre-emergent I used back on 9/17. I would say it didn't do anything...

My neighbors on both sides have almost no weeds. The 1 waters and mows regularly and the other only mows like once a month.

Looking at what I put down last year, I am wondering if some weed seeds came in with the Milo apps.

Celsius is labeled to treat common vetch, at the low rate no less. So one down.

Looking at what I put down last year, I am wondering if some weed seeds came in with the Milo apps.

Here's how Milorganite is made:
Milorganite is heat-dried in large-scale, bus-sized rotary dryers that operate at 900–1200°F.
Are you still thinking that the weeds came from a bag of Milorganite? I'm having a little trouble believing that, as a 140 degree compost pile kills weed seeds.

I was just spitting balling but neither of the neighbors on either side have these funky weeds. And I know they don't use any pre-em at all.

However between the celsius/msm and the freezing temps again the past 2 weeks, it seems to have taken care of most of the weeds. We are out of the freeze now and back in the 80's, so I applied a blanket app of celsius/msm yesterday to kill any of the stragglers, using my new YT25E sprayer, pretty pleased with the sprayer, wish it had dual shoulder straps though.

Wow that second app of celsius with msm did the trick. All the weeds are nice and dead after 2 days.
