Planting Bermuda P77 over Perennial Rye

Post by Jakemauldin » March 12th, 2019, 11:57 pm

So I recently finished my house build here in Fort Worth, Texas. Well we finished in October '18. I have 3 acres which I have owned for 12 years, which I bought when I got out of high school.(My dad does have good ideas afterall). In my immediate yard I planted Perennial Rye to help with soil erosion and establishing somewhat of a yard since I hauled 120 loads of topsoil in to build my foundation leaving me with a huge dirt mound. This would suffice until warm season grasses were able to replace the Rye. The remaining acreage is native grasses, such as coastal and some weeds here and there. Last weekend I took the mower with a pull behind scarifier and dragmat combo and raked all the leaves and fallen twigs up along with smoothing over the area in preparation of planting the Princess 77 in a few months. The plan is for around June or whenever night time temps stay in the 70's. I have seen several topics where yall address planting Rye over the top of Bermuda but not the other way around. I wasn't sure if the P77 could be overseeded on top of the Bermuda or would the Bermuda need to be killed off or tilled under to provide optimal growing potential for when I plant the P77? Also for the remainder of the yard would you suggest spraying Glyphosate to kill all native grass and start fresh? I have a rather shady yard, post oaks are spread throughout. I'm on the fence as to whether I will be successful getting the P77 to grow in certain areas or it will be a huge Fail, I purchased a single 25 lb bag from www.hancockseed.com for $415. I was needing your advice before going and blowing another $1500-2000 on the remaining seed for the 3 acres.

I have a rather shady yard, ...it will be a huge Fail
Bermuda and shade are incompatible. You can grow St Augustine in the shade just fine. It will roll right through the rye. Can you actually water that much turf?

I say rather shady area but I wanted y’all to be the judge on that as well, I’ll post a few more pictures. It only allows two pics at a time. And my wife refuses to have St Augustine, in alternative I was thinking of seeding Zoysia in the more shady areas. I read somewhere it seems to resemble Bermuda more so than St. Augustine. My main yard is mostly sunny so I believe I should be ok there for Bermuda but my house also has 30’ peaks so I’m looking for input there as well. Sorry for having so many questions.

Don’t do it!!! We built our house in Granbury (near Fort Worth) 3 years ago. We have six legs pecan trees on a little under .75 acres. The Bermuda does alright in the spring, but as the summer progresses it gets super thin. Then it’s weed city in the fall. Once those trees get leaves the grass under won’t get enough sun. Just my two cents.
