When is it too late to scalp Zoysia?

I can’t seem to find this information anywhere. I’m in zone 8a, I’m not great at determining %greeness but I’d say about 25%.

My plan was to scalp this weekend, which really will be around a 1” cut. Would this be too late? Could it ever be too late to the point that it damages the grass?

If you cannot find the information, maybe you don't have to scalp it. I know there's no reason to scalp St Augustine. It just grows up through the old dormant blades. You might scalp half your yard and leave the other as is and see if there is a difference in late May. Take good notes for next year...and please report back here with your findings.

Thanks Dchall_San_Antonio. What I meant by not being able to find it is any information on when (or why) it would be counterproductive to scalp because it’s too late.

I see a lot of articles and forums including this site suggesting it with zoysia for both faster greenup through warmer soil temps and for the simple fact that the old growth is mostly just “in the way”.

Leaving a portion unscalped is an interesting idea though. Maybe I’ll try that.
