Over fertlizied Bermuda? HELP!!

Post by kylele04 » April 20th, 2019, 2:26 pm

Hello, first time home owner in Dallas, TX here. I had my lawn guy fertilized my yard about 5 weeks ago and now my back and front lawn has not grown in the Spring, please help! I asked him what product he used but he does not remember. I'm the only one in the neighborhood with brown grass. :banghead: What should I do to help it and how long should will it take before it grows back? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Did you guys by any chance get a late frost? I would see about doing a soil test. There may be a university or something similar nearby that will test your soil and provide suggestions based on their findings. There are also online labs you can send samples too.

If you want the soil test interpreted here (free!), the test will need to be performed by Logan Labs. We track year-to-year changes and adjust the plan as needed. See the sticky thread in the soil forum if interested.

Did he use a liquid fertilization? Maybe herbicide residue if so?

All you can do is be patient.

The grass will awaken when it awakens. Fertilizing a dormant lawn does nothing to awaken the grass. Fertilizer requires active roots. The first fertilizer app for bermuda should go down AFTER the SECOND mowing of REAL GRASS (not weeds). Note that this is only for bermuda. Other grasses should wait until late May to be fertilized. Since they fertilized early, the fertilizer that is there will not be taken in by the roots and will be wasted.

The best thing you can do to awaken the lawn is to go back to November and give it a high dose of high N, fast release fertilizer.
The next best thing is to not overseed with rye for the winter. This approach is guaranteed to delay the awakening of southern grasses.
