Can anyone ID this grass for me?

Post by Melissajo67 » June 13th, 2019, 9:35 pm

Hi, I have this grass growing in my yard and I am not sure what kind of grass it is. It is spreading more and more every year. It seems to be good grass and so easy to mow. I planted some Bermuda so it is growing it with it. Hoping someone can help me ID this because I would love to plant more of it. Thanks

Are you saying that it's not St Augustine?...given that you have identified St Augustine as one of your grass types.

I do have St Augustine in my front yard. This does not really run like St Augustine. The grass I can not ID is in my back yard and and far side yard and runs more in patches if that makes any sense.

That is St Augustine with a brown spot disease. If you mow it at the mower's highest setting, it will completely wipe out your bermuda, so you should decide which one you want. If you mow at the mower's lowest setting, it will look like a weedy lawn mix of both bermuda and St Aug. If you want to spread the St Augustine, do this: Only water the St Augustine, mow at the mower's highest setting, spot spray the perimeter of the St Aug with an atrazine herbicide once in April and again, only if needed, in Sept, and only fertilize the St Augustine and runners as it spreads. Also mow the weeds at the mower's lowest setting, don't water the weeds, and don't fertilize the weeds.

The way to get rid of the disease in your St Augustine is explained here.

Looks like carpetgrass to me Melissa. Very similar appearance to St Augustine, but it has slightly smaller blades. It is available as seed too.
