How to get rid of this type of weed without chemicals

Post by Tsicoupe » June 7th, 2020, 6:33 pm

This year I have these weeds (pictured below) that have started to take over my lawn. They started out in a small patch and are now straying to grow everywhere. I have a dog and a child so I did not want to use harmful chemicals. I have tried pulling them by hand as I do with most weeds but these are small and everywhere and it doesn’t seem possible. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thank you

I'm terrible at weed ID so we'll let somebody with visual acuity do that.

A Weed Hound might work. It's still technically "by hand" but without the kneeling down and crawling around. They used to be sold at Home Depot, but I can't say I've looked lately. You put it on the weed, step on the step-stand, pull the stick, and hit the button. The now-beheaded and slightly be-rooted weed falls away, dead, into the lawn, as a warning to other weeds.

Even if it won't work for that specifically, I use mine a lot of other places and you'll get my Weed Hound when you pry it from my cold, dirty hand.

Your other option is a least-toxic consideration where you try a comparatively non-toxic herbicide first, like Tenacity (you can't drink it, but it's not that far off). If it's on the label, great, if not, step up a rung. If there's nothing acceptable and too thready for the Weed Hound...you go crawling.

Thanks for the suggestions, I actually just got one of those and they work great for the bigger weeds but these are so small and plentiful that it doesn’t work. I will look at tenacity but if anyone knows what kind of weed that is I would appreciate it. Thank you so much

There are some Arizona members on the site.

You could significantly up your odds of getting a hit by removing an entire weed (with roots if possible) and placing it on a white sheet of paper as a background. Get as close as your phone/camera will focus, and post that picture. Remember - WHOLE weed.
