Will this survive or waste of time/energy?

Post by lojack323 » January 30th, 2021, 3:27 pm

Hello.

We're getting some work done in our backyard and will be tearing up about 200 sqft of our St. Augustine lawn. I've been plugging another area in our front yard with St. Augustine to let it slowly take over.

If I were to rent a sod cutter and transplant the St. Augustine from the backyard to the front yard, does anyone think it would survive a few months laying there like that that until it warms up enough to wake up? Or does this sound like a waste of time and energy (and money to rent the sod cutter)?

It was a lot of time spent filling in the backyard with plugs (lots of homemade ones) and part of me hates to see it just get destroyed and thrown away.

Thanks for any input!

It's not exactly clear what you're planning to do with the transplanted sod "laying there like that"...

Are you planning to have the sod on the soil, or just piled up or something?

Sorry I should have been more clear. It will be on the soil in its intended spot.

OK. So if your question is really about "will it be OK if it's dormant for a while in a new location?", then it will be OK if it's supplied with adequate moisture (too much as bad as too little). Dormancy is not the equivalent of dead with some mysterious resurrection - it's a very low amount of growth and metabolism. With the roots being very short (due to sod cutting), you'll have to make up for the inability to fetch moisture from deeper. It's not certain success, but it can be done.

Thanks for the reply.

I’m going to go ahead and give it a shot. I just didn’t want to waste the effort if it was going to be a total waste of time.

The sod should be growing by now in HB with the weather you've had. Did you waste your time?
