Proactive Biofungicides Program Heads-Up

Post by andy10917 » April 15th, 2014, 9:42 am

Well, it's April 15th, which means that it's time to start finding and purchasing your favorite items for the Mid-May start of the Proactive Biofungicides program. Serenade, Actinovate, Phosphites, etc are not things that you're going to find in larger quantities at the Big Box, so a little lead time is needed.

Please don't turn this thread into a "what is it?" thread if you're not familiar with the approach -- use the Search capability. There are 3-4 years of threads out there on the topic...

I started mine last week with an application of SumaGrow and cracked corn that should be beneficial to the biofungicides I will be applying.

Public enemy #1 is rust, followed by leaf spot - and I'm doing some things juuuuuust in case I've ever had Summer Patch and didn't know it. (Which I don't believe I did, but it can't hurt to be a little proactive anyways!)

I put down my first app of Companion this past weekend, but now it snowed again!! I think I'll be ok though. Soil temps were in the 50's. I am planning to do alternating apps of Companion and Serenade every two weeks or so throughout the spring to try and combat the rust and what I believe was summer patch last year. I'm still learning, but thanks to the advice and reading on the forums I think I might be ahead of the game this year. I'm going to REALLY watch my watering habits this year. I think I may have been putting way too much water down in years past. I'm also going to keep my grass cut a little shorter. I was cutting at 4"+ and I believe that was too high for my grass. It became floppy and matted down which may have led to some fungus issues last year.

My first try at Proactive Biofungicides Program has a delivery on the way for Simple Success' companion product. I already have A small pouch of Actinovate. The next thing I'm getting is Serenade and just for the heck of it; Beneficial Nematodes. I can't deal with all the stress like last year, whispering to the grass, wondering, wondering what's wrong. If this new start doesn't works, so be it.
If by chance it does work; may the bio organisms live long and prosper!

What are the prices like for this stuff and is there a list of reputable sources? I'm kinda considering it due to last year's fungal issues.

Thanks. How much use do you get out of that quart in a season?

It all depends. My first app I blew through a quart and a half (5oz/k). I have had summer patch really bad the last couple years though.

Your local rep may be able to get it cheaper. I would advise though to check their prices. My local rep helped me get a 2.5 gallon container, but it ended up being more expensive than just ordering through the Simple Success website.

Has anyone tried the phosphite treatment? Can all the Biofungicides be applied on the same day, or should they be spaced applications. Anyone know a place to get phosphites? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Oh yeah. I don't recommend cocktails for foliar applications, though, as there is a limited surface area and too much vying for absorption.

Use the Search feature - there is a reasonable amount of material on the site.

PS: many people quit Phosphites, because there is nothing visible that happens. It's similar to building your personal immune system, though -- the lack of serious fast-moving diseases is the result. No news is great news!

Thanks, Andy. I did a search here on the forum and found the pumpkins but can't reach the website after repeated tries. I saw on the web that pythium blight can affect St. Augustine, so I decided to not take the chance. I'll keep looking until I find it I guess.

My favorite Phosphite product is the TKO (Growth Products) phosphite, but there are other very good ones.

Phosphites are sometimes sold as fertilizers, and sometimes not. It's an expensive process that not all companies deal with, but there are no known differences.

Super duper, super, Andy. I just ordered Companion from them. Nice people, easy to talk to, and quick service on the consumer end.
Thanks!
Tony

Has anyone had any luck getting Companion in the 2.5gal containers for a reasonable price? I can find it around here but the prices range from $305 to $310. Either shipping or gas (1.5 hours to the closest place) is a deal killer. Makes it cheaper to order the quart bottles as I need it a better deal.

Not here, but I haven't looked.

-------------------------

Pssssst - Indy peeps - getting hot (80s then to 70s), then going to rain starting this weekend.

My plan is to get another app of Serenade down before Friday.

Yep, I'm planning a dose this week before the heat here in N.IN. I'm trying to get an app down of Serenade and Companion at least once a month for the next few months (started in April). Hopefully by watching my watering habits, mowing heights, and these applications of biofungicides, I can cut down on the fungal issues I had last year. Fingers crossed!

I contacted my local rep (who wasn't exactly local). He managed to get a 2.5 gallon container from, I believe, Colorado direct. The catch is that it was actually more expensive than just ordering 10 bottles from the Simple Success website even with shipping. I am not a fan of the 2.5 gallon container either because it lacks a decent pour spout and has a tendency to want to spill. That's expensive stuff to be spilling.

I know JG gets the 2.5 gallon containers I think delivered right to his house from a local supplier for cheaper than ordering online.
