Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
Don't worry about the test--that's standard operating procedure for me. First drop was March 1, but the test wasn't dug out until after that. As long as there were no bits of corn or Bay State in the stuff, you're fine. Even if there were, following the sampling procedures means the error should be small.

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
Great! I will send off the soil samples this weekend and will be posting the result for everyone's evaluation and help!
Is there any reason to not use the BSF that I have exclusively, since at the current pricing, its my cheapest "organic" fertilizer (besides Starbucks grounds)? I dropped some corn meal earlier since I had easy access but is there any additional benefit to mixing things up a little?

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
Not really, no. You already mixed it up, and are planning on the coffee grounds, which is enough of a mix to make me happy. This year, I'm using three things--soybean meal, Milorganite, and cracked corn. You also used three.
Warranted, if you should stumble across a cheap organic feeding that's comparable with the BSF, go right ahead and use it. It's not going to hurt! But don't make a special trip or spend a fortune. You don't need to.
I'm sure you'll have some leaves in fall, so that will help too and they count as another source as well.

Just a bump on this thread. I called Carl today. Only comes in 40lb bags, paper bags so no big box stores will carry it as it needs to be kept dry. No cash, M-F 8-4pm. $3.50/bag.

I wish you could go direct to buy Milorganite, I'd be there in a Milwaukee minute (which is 90 minutes for normal people)

Old thread, but I was curious what the bag rate is for Bay State. Looking to get some this week, and want to know how much I need.

My first year with it. I bought 1200 lbs. I LOVE the price and will do it again next year, however I think it's missing some of the iron that Milo has.

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
I just picked up as much Bay State as my mini van could hold. I spoke with Carl about the N-P-K and Fe. These are the numbers that they have been averaging over the last several weeks. Obviously this isn't an apples to apples comparison to Milorganite since I don't have access to the same type of information, however, I think it's pretty safe to say that the 2 are very similar. Factor in the price of Bay State and I can't imagine a better deal anywhere in the country.paulr wrote:My first year with it. I bought 1200 lbs. Bay State:
1 bag = 40lbs.
N: 4.59%
P: 6.2%
K:
Fe: 4.5%
Milorganite:
1 bag = 36lbs
N: 5%
P: 2%
K: 0%
Fe: 4%

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
I spoke to Carl just yesterday, and he mentioned something along the lines of 8-6-0, and said they can only put the lowest possible amount on the bag.
Maybe I misunderstood, but I was fairly certain it was higher than what you just wrote.
Either way, it's by far thew best deal around!

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
I just saw Bay State Fert at my local hardware store (Justice Hardware in Weymouth) so if you can't make it to the MWRA plant to pick it up here is the alternative.

40lb bag is $5.99. The owners said it just came into the store about 3 weeks ago. I remember Carl mentioning they were trying to get the product in a plastic bags so stores would be able carry it.

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
Sweet! That's a great price for convenience. Delivered by the ton (a pallet of 50 bags), it works out to $6.66 a bag. Let's hope distribution increases while holding at that price.

Re: BayState Fertilizer - Cheap Milorganite Alternative
Yes, as I just indicated. Just search for my posts about delivery. I thought it would catch on, but no one seemed interested. When searching, realize that it's Bay State, not BayState.

Anyone know of a source close to Newton or any of the other western suburbs?
