Anyone using Holganix/Sumagreen/Sumagrow or the like this year?

Post by kevreh » March 10th, 2017, 12:49 pm

I'm thinking of introducing one of these products to my "portfolio" this year to see if I gain any benefits. Protilizer is another product (but I haven't been able to find a list of ingredients). I know you can buy these ingredients ala carte, but I want to keep it simple and not mess around with sourcing and mixing various ingredients (probably also costs more).

So what's everyone using this year? I've read the threads from years past. Some discussion of people using these products but no long terms results (eg. "I use it every years because it makes a difference").

BTW, this page, from Holganix, suggests that Sumagreen has a lot less of the "good stuff" in it;

I'll be using Holganix this spring. I'll be applying heavy doses.

I will check the deeper shade areas, and decide whether they need Sumagrow or not.

I forget if I tried Sumagreen or Sumagrow, but I didn't see any results at all from it. I think my soil's already too well-tuned, and I have no really challenging areas. It's all full sun, well-fed, and untouched by most pesticides.

Well, you two probably won't see a lot of benefit, guessing, due to your experience level and current care level. :) Law of diminishing return. Guess that's what Morph is saying. Andy, did you ever pinpoint what it was in the Sumagrow that helped with the shady areas? Humics? Microbes? other?

LoneRanger, what kind of results have you gotten?

There's been some discussion on this forum about people trying these products, no longer terms results based on using it a full season though (at least what I was able to find). There's case studies for these companies showing before/after results that seem good. Local lawn care company I spoke with uses Protilizer, but I haven't been able to find an ingredient label for that stuff.

I'm staying away from anything that sells itself as a "magical-elixer" without backing it up with details and ingredients. That link I included in my first post suggests Holganix has a lot more good stuff in it (example...nematodes?!). Wasn't able to find ingredients for Sumagrow (or is it Sumagreen?) yet.

Not planning on it. On 1.4 acres there are other things that would benefit the lawn much more per $$

Nope. Never spent much time trying to figure out why it works in Shade.

PS: "Sumagrow" is the substance created by Michigan State, "Sumagreen" is a product containing Sumagrow.

I'm giving it a go this year. I hoping to:
a) see how far into the shady corners of my lawn I can get attractive turf before I break down and fill with pachysandra
b) improve the biological and physical characteristics of my soil with better bacterial and fungal populations. From a purely chemical standpoint, the soil is almost perfect, baring my once low K that I'm improving with Sulfate of Potash apps and high P, but the soil feels tight and less lively than I'd like.

I found this PDF that lists the ingredients http://www.kellysolutions.com/erenewals ... _58_AM.pdf

I purchased a bottle of Holganix earlier this week and made my first application this past weekend. I'm eager to see others' results as the season progresses. I'm hoping to have success - I am a new homeowner with a new construction sod lawn laid last fall, so while I have no "life before Holganix" to compare results, I am interested to see what kind of root structure will have developed by next spring after a full season of frequent applications. Perhaps now would be a good time to designate a "control" area in my yard... Anyways, looking forward to seeing/reading some long term results we have here (Holganix/Sumagreen/etc.). Obviously there is no such thing as magic in a bottle, but I'm excited to see the potential of the role products like this could play in my budding regimen of organically developing and supporting a healthy soil.

GaTiller and Lawngonewrong keep us posted. I'm planning on trying Holganix this year, just need to go buy it.

GaTiller, definitily set aside a no-apply area in your yard, maybe a 10'x10' patch, so you can see if there's a difference. Since you have sod, I think its a good idea to use a product like Holganix in addition to other practice to introduce organics (mulching when you mow, organic ferts, etc...)

Thank you STL for posting the label. Interesting that besides the fauna it is all humic acid.

I purchased a 40 lb bag of Anderson's Humic DG from Gardeners Edge last year, which is 70% humic acid. I see you can still get it with free shipping if you google for a coupon. Maybe it isn't a strictly comparable product, but then again it may be an alternative for those on the fence, to see if the main active ingredient in Holganix/Sumagrow has any effect.

I have been using Halganix but wonder if this product is mostly absorbed through leaves or roots as it's mostly compost tea with beneficial fungi.

my current lawn care company uses it with 4/year applications. Overall yard seems good this year, but had lots of free irrigation in late July/August this year, so I can't really tell if its impactful or not. Wish I had a soil test last year, but only did one this year recently to tell any difference. Will take another one next year for comparison

I use Sumagrow sometimes, especially in the shade.
