Re: Mclane greens mower?
Yeah, it's just a 10 blade McLane. I believe they also use bearings instead of bushings but those two things are really the only differences.
Funny that they talk about Briggs engines but the pictures they show have Honda engines.

Re: Mclane greens mower?
I think they also have a rear roller instead of the wheels like the regular one.

Re: Mclane greens mower?
I may be splitting hairs here but are you talking about a drum, like an actual greens mower or just a roller? No McLane I have ever seen has a drum but some of the 17" push mowers have a 6 rubber wheels put together to act as the drive mechanism.lagerman72 wrote:I think they also have a rear roller instead of the wheels like the regular one.
Don't get me wrong, I like McLane's (I currently have 4 of them), but I don't think I could ever bring myself to refer to one as a greens mower. Just a bunch of marketing mumbo jumbo in my opinion.

Re: Mclane greens mower?
Here is the website for them. It does look like a different set up than a usual McLane. No drop-able combo wheels for the drive mechanism. You can see something that looks like a large rubber drum in the back.

Re: Mclane greens mower?
Says it has the "roller drive" which is the drop down 4 wheel belt system

Re: Mclane greens mower?
Looking through that website link this is interesting and something I have never seen before. It has the "roller drive" like the 17" push mower I mentioned earlier but is powered. Looks like it must have a clutch under that black cover next to the engine for the "roller drive" and is missing the cover on the right where the chain drive for the reel would be on a normal McLane. Interesting...
Here is a pic of a 17" McLane push mower with what appears to be a similar system to what this has for it's "roller drive".

HOC and FOC
Ajmikola,
Have a read over the documents in this BL/ATY post. In this article specifically, it describes the fundamentals on Frequency of Clip (FOC, or clip rate). The number of blades a reel has is related to Height of Cut (HOC). As the HOC increases, the number of blades should decrease to keep the HOC proportional to the FOC. Therefore, with HOC settings in the 1-2" range, it will be a waste of money to buy a mower with more reel blades. In actuality, even in the .5" range, an 8 blade reel would be better than an 11, 14, or even 15 blade unit. The reason I bring this up is because I don't want you to spend money on a unit that calls itself a "greens" mower if the only tangible difference is the increased amount of reel blades it has. Unless cutting below .5", more blades could actually become a hindrance.
This lawn is mowed at 5/8ths with an 8 blade reel. The reason to buy a true greens mower is for ease of adjustment, rigidity, drums/rollers, and weight.

Re: Mclane greens mower?
My problem, has and always will be the mountain in my front yard.
I just dont see anything making it look like the yards i see on here.
In my opinion, my yard has come a long way, but no one can really tell me what a greens mower will do on a steep grade like that,
Which is why i think a tru green would be better, having wheels and such.
What are your thoughts on that dfw? Btw i've always wanted to fly a plane, bet you get all the chicks dont you????? [GRIMACING FACE]

One Chick
I only have one chick, boss!
For a hill like that, I'd go with a simple rotary or a manual push reel as sometimes the simplest answer/fix is best. For the rest of the yard, I'd stick with the JD or Toro you looked at earlier. I'm not convinced a greens mower couldn't do that hill side to side, depending on HOC.
I got my private pilot license just mowing lawns in high school. If you want to do it, go for it. Flying clubs make it affordable.

I heard that!
I will eventually go with a real greens mowers.
To be honest, i really like jacobsen, i have gotten close a few times to pulling the trigger, but i just need to wait till next season. We only have 3 months or so left in the season. That will give me time to do some leveling and research, but come next year, i hope to be on ya'lls level!

You won't regret it. I went from a rotor mower to a cheap push reel to a used gas 17" McLane to this:ajmikola wrote:dfw_pilot wrote:I only have one chick, boss!

and that's a .5" HOC. Each cutting head weighs 73# and the mower 1k# Really irons out the bumps!

Re: Mclane greens mower?
TruCut will climb the best. Won't be a problem. In Atlanta, if you do offer reel cutting commercially...it's a trucut. (Think about it, up n down trailer etc.)
