Picked up a triplex

Kmartel you were right. After reel mowing KBG last year and then going to a rotory on a Nomix I really miss it... and so does the wife. I got the green light to renovate next year, and just got my 2500B delivered from an auction in Florida.

It needs alittle TLC, but so far everything works on it, starts right up, and has no leaks. It's a 2011 JD 2500B with ~1800hrs on it. QA5 7 blade reel cutting units with a current max bench HOC of 1.5". Has groomers (currently spaced for greens conditioning, but will change them over to the fairway setup), and rear roller brushes. I'm going to backlap, and setup the heads this weekend so I can get some seat time on it this year and then go thru it all this winter. Should keep me busy when the snow is on the ground, and keep my mind off of next year's renovation for a bit.

That is awesome!! Congrats.

The tires look like there for greens, I will be curious to hear how they work on minor slopes. The turfs on my triplex can tear up easily if not careful.

What is your intended HOC???

When are you gonna get one HLG? :D Just so you know, the shipper I used is an independent guy from Indianapolis. Very fair on shipping cost, and frequently is hauling stuff from South to North. Let me know if you need his info!

The tires are the smooth ones for a green. I tested it out on the ~16° slope on the one front yard hill. It made it up and down the hill at 10pm with dew on the grass, but was alittle slippery going up. I'm going to fit some turf tires on it. The owners manual states it can handle up to 25° slope without worry, and has turf tires as an available option.

As for HOC, I'm going to let the yard tell me what that is going to be.. that and time I have to maintain around 40k sq ft. I would like to be back around .75" or so, we will see, but would still be happy if It was kept around 1-1.25" I have a few plans in place to try and smooth the yard out better before seed drop. Hopefully they work. I'm sure the yard can handle being cut at 1" now, but I feel you can go that low on almost any yard due to the way a reel rides and hugs the terrain.

Fairly smooth, but has its share of ruts, bumps, hills, and a ditch. Currently have it at 2" with the x590, which I'll still have for running over leaves, spraying, towing, etc.

I'm going to try and get the triplex out this weekend and cut at 1.5". Then try and get it to 1.0" by end of fall and keep it there next year until the kill in June.

Now that's what I'm talking about ! Congrats man. Looks like we may need a seperate "cool season grass maintained at 1" or less" forum

Those reels look like they will be lighter than mine which will be nice. Mine are a pain to move when they're off the mower

They are, but that is not the reason I decided on them and the 2500B. Yours being heavier should give an even better stripe. The whole machine weighs in at 1270lbs according to the manual. Much lighter than the 2653B or A like you have, but still a beast when compared to the X590. I had the opportunity to get some seat time behind a 2653B and a 2500B a few months ago and that helped me decide on the one I got. I ended up with this one as I believe the QA5 cutting heads will be a better fit for the property. I have some small hills and undulations and with the QA5 having the front and rear rollers closer together as well as only being 22" wide, they should follow the terrain better than a QA7 that is 26" or 30" wide. Also the 2500B total cut width is 62" wide and I have a couple spots in the yard where a 72" or 84" wide cut width would not fit. I also wanted to experiment with the turf conditioners/groomers and you don't usually see those on a 2653B(available for the 26" heads only I believe)

And let's be honest , unless you have 5 + acres to cut, 62 inch width is plenty wide

Sweet!

I had the QA5 cutting head on my 220E and loved how easy it was to remove and work on.

Agreed. I've been using a 54" deck to cut with so far and it was getting the job done.

I'll be working on them this weekend but they do look easy. Looks like one retaining pin, un-hook the chain, 2 bolts for the motor and they are off

You got it, that is all that is needed. I also learned to adjust the chain depending on terrain (Well really just adjusted it until it worked with my yard and then left it alone, but you get the idea). I am sure you already have it but JD has a great service manual you can download for the QA5.
