Suggested models for getting a new mower?
I might have to get a new mower in the near future. Could you guys suggest some models to look into?
Here is what I'm looking for:
-Good quality single-blade residential grade walk-behind mower
-Name brand
-Price: Ideally under $400; definitely under $450
-21 or 22 inch cutting diameter (currently have 21, but either is fine)
-Not a high wheel design
-Cutting height range of 1.5-4 inches with increments of 0.33 inch or finer between each setting
-Good mulching system, but with rear bag option included. I don't need side discharge.
-Self propelled (ideally a system that's feedback-variable, like Personal Pace, instead of a fixed speed system)
-Has hose connection for washing out deck after use
-Good, reliable engine
-Robust/reliable/good track record/fit and finish
-Easy to change oil
What series/models should I consider? I'm asking because you guys might have specific suggestions that I wouldn't think of.
Thanks!

Do most mowers have only 0.5-inch increments? If I have to compromise because of that, that's ok.

You've described a Toro Recycler or Super Recycler to a T. I have the Super Recycler with the Honda engine and really like it, but it's a little above your price range. You might be able to find the one without the Honda engine for ~$450 and can definitely find the regular Recycler in your price range.

I have the HRR21 honda from Home Depot (thats where i got it). $399 but it has a 2 blade system if that disqualifies it for you.

Re: Suggested models for getting a new mower?
Apparently the cheap Craftsman mowers like mine are still using steel decks?! Could that be accurate? My mower is only 75 lbs. I've heard that aluminum can warp over time.
PSU: I'll have to have a look at that one.

Do you have lowest-end self-propelled model in that series, or do you have the push version? It looks like overall it's better than the equivalent Toro models on paper...except maybe less cutting height positions.
I never thought of 2 blades being used that way. I wonder how durable that system is over time.

Mine is self propelled. Starts in the first pull every time and it cuts good. Haven't used it enough to comment on durabilityGreen wrote: ↑June 16th, 2017, 9:39 pmDo you have lowest-end self-propelled model in that series, or do you have the push version? Re: Suggested models for getting a new mower?
Why do you want a single blade if you also want a good mulching system??Green wrote: ↑June 9th, 2017, 10:02 pmHere is what I'm looking for:

The hose end connections for washing out the underside of the deck are useless. If you want to clean the underside of the deck, tip the mower on its side and clean away.
You can't go wrong with a Honda, if you are willing to spend $450 for a mower I would go a little extra and buy the Honda HRX. I have had mine now for 12 years, mow twice a week, mulch every leaf in my yard, and it runs like new still. It gives an excellent cut (providing you sharping the blade two or three times a year). You can always put a single blade on it if you want, but not sure why?
