New reel owner!

Post by Deano80 » March 18th, 2019, 7:51 pm

Hey guys! I just picked up a used Tru Cut 27'' from a local small engine repair shop. The mower belonged to the owner and he said it's got very low hours despite its age. I managed to speak with a representative from Tru Cut and provided him with the serial number and confirmed this model is about 18 years old. I'm really not sure if it's a commercial or residential model. Is there anyway to tell? I can post some pictures tomorrow if that would be useful.

Also, I found a local golf course mechanic who oversees maintenance at a course nearby and he said he would sharpen the blades for $50 which is very reasonable from what I'm finding. He will get the reel and bedknife adjusted but this is something that I feel I should learn myself to keep it cutting well between sharpenings. I have searched on Youtube and a few other forums but haven't seen anything that shows the actual process and I was curious if anything like that exist here?

Also, I don't have the spanner wrench and didn't have any luck finding one on Google. Any reputable places to pick one up?

I use a site rrproducts for a lot of my maintenance parts. They have all sorts of stuff. Best way is to get a manual for your model and look up specific part numbers.

50 bucks is a great price to have him do work.

Backlapping is something you can do on your own. Grinding the reel or bedknivmfe is more complicated and really requires specialized equipment. Well worth 50 bucks to have that done annually.

Learn to adjust reel to bed knife too. You'll inevitably hit stuff and need to tweak it. You can tell when you start skipping lines.

And, use marine grease. Check the bearings on your rollers and lube them often.

There are plenty on YouTube to be found. I dont have any ones personally for McLane as I own a Toro machine, but the principles are the same.

I didn't see any videos adjusting reel to bedknife. Several sharpening videos and overall reviews but that's it.
