Nobody can help you with that without know what form the Iron Sulfate is in - liquid, powder, crystals? What are you trying to do with the Iron Sulfate - kill moss, darken the grass, apply to soil, etc?

By "darken the grass", Andy was indirectly asking if your intention is a foliar application, as opposed to a soil application. If that is indeed the case, then you're using the wrong tool. For a foliar application, you'll want to apply the solution using a pump sprayer. The rest of what you need to know has been conveniently written up in the Spray Iron Applications To Your Lawn article.

No one can tell you the "correct" settings for a hose-end sprayer, or any sprayer for that matter or even a spreader. Your application rate is entirely dependent on how fast you walk, the spacing of your rows, and swath or overlap of your spray. Calibration of any sprayer is up to you, be it a pump sprayer or a hose-end sprayer. The article has instructed you on how much product to apply per 1,000 sq ft. It's up to you to take it from there. Many here will suggest that you set your equipment (sprayer, spreader, hand) to the lowest setting and then make multiple passes until you've used up the pre-measured amount of product. I started that way years ago when using a hose-end sprayer for other products and then gradually increased the setting until I could reliably make just one pass.

Am I on the right track if I put 3 tablespoons of powder in the sprayer, fill with water to the top and set the dial to 3?

Your best bet is to do a test area, and wait a day to see what your results are. Everyone is trying nicely to tell you that their are too many factors that affect results. "Fill with water to the top" tells us nothing - we do not know what the capacity of the sprayer is, the amount of Ferrous Sulfate in the powder you are using, how many square feet you are applying it to, etc.

I will say this: FAS applications work far better for me (and others) when applied with a pump-sprayer or backpack sprayer for foliar applications - the droplet size is as much as 1000X smaller for those those sprayers than a hose-end sprayer, and the larger droplets mostly run right off the grass blades to the soil. I never use a hose-end sprayer for FAS applications.

Quick update for those who want to try a hose end sprayer.

3 tablespoons of iron powder
Filled the container with water and mixed it vigorously.
Set the dial to 10

I was able to do 2 full passes yesterday walking at a slower than normal pace. Had a good amount of rain today

The lawn darkened extremely evenely but very little.

Next attempt will be 5 tablespoons.
