Electric Edger/Weed Whacker

Post by MorpheusPA » April 16th, 2021, 8:34 pm

Are these OK? My ancient gas-powered one has given up the ghost after decades of service, and I'm looking into purchasing a more-modern battery powered one I don't have to start (Mr. Shoulder is not happy pulling Mr. Starting Cord any longer, particularly as machinery ages).

The property is large enough that having a cord behind me isn't realistic, nor possible in some areas, so it has to be battery powered. I haven't decided on a model, voltage, or...well, anything yet, really, so suggestions are welcome.

I've got one that works pretty well, but you might want to get a spare battery. I don't remember if the battery doesn't last long or if I want doing a good job of keeping it charged, but I ended up buying a spare on Amazon.

Awesome, thanks! That was my thought as well, as I had two spares with my mower. They say 40 minutes of life, which I'm fully aware means 25.

The one I have is a Black & Decker. I looked, but didn't see a model number on it.

One of my neighbors borrowed it once, then went and bought one.

If you have some battery powered tools+batteries that are good shape, it might be worth it to stay with the same brand. And...watch the weight of what ever you're thinking about getting. I replaced my old, old Weed Whacker for a new DeWalt, the DeWalt is nice, but weighs a lot more and isn't as nimble as my old trimmer.

Understood. Yeah, I'm not into carrying 30 pounds either, and we plan on staying in the same brands and using the same batteries.

Well, for everything except the lawnmower, anyway...

I've had a Ryobi hedge trimmer from Home Depot for a few years. Works great and the other battery tools seem well rated. I also had a landscaper tell me that the Stihl electrics are solid.

Cool, thanks! So far, from online reviews, it seems that most makes are relatively solidly built. Big names, anyway.

I have a sneaking suspicion that there's exactly one motor company and a few power links that just take several different battery voltages...

I know with my battery powered shop tools it is very nice to have multiple batteries so that you can easily swap and keep rolling.

Totally agreed. We're planning on two batteries. If both die, it means the edges were completely out of control and the break is welcome. :-)

Even my smallest chuckless drill is rechargeable...but will run off house power if it has to.
