Time Lapse

Post by dfw_pilot » April 4th, 2015, 12:03 am

The iPhone 6 does a great job at time lapse video. This is the last 30 minutes of our 6:45 minute flight from Houston to Anchorage today.

The problem I ran into was that if you record for longer than 30 minutes, the phone drops a bunch of frames to save space, making the video too fast and jittery. I ran this though iMovie (the most unintuative program Apple has ever written) to try and slow it down a bit, and it did, but makes it more jittery. If you want to use the iPhone for time lapse, just record segments shorter than 30 minutes and combine them later if you need to. If you are interested, the iPhone will also record slow-mo, in case you want to record your bermuda growing in June.

All the best,

dfw

You must of not heard the "pilot" telling you to turn off portable devices on final approach. :rotfl:
Very cool.

bwwwwaaahhahahahahahaaaaaaaa!!!!!

WWWAAY COOL!!

I would love to do that with my lawn. I actually have a couple of my external video cameras set up to take the same picture, same location, ever day - so if I can find a tool to do it I may give it a shot....

FAA

Post by dfw_pilot » April 4th, 2015, 10:31 am

JAG, that's sweet, man. That will always be some of the best flying there is. By the way, the FAA changed the rules so that electronics can remain on when in airplane mode. It's a seminal moment in FAA history where they actually used common sense to determine a rule. I use airplane mode to save my battery and save money - I once forgot to put it in airplane mode and got a text message over Russia when it randomly connected to a network for a few minutes. I got charged $20 for the roaming data use!

HLG, I want to see that whole year put into a few second time lapse. 24 fps into 365 is the year in 15 seconds! I know they sell those motorized mounts to add dimension (not Dithiopyr) with a slow pan. It would be cool if guys uploaded their lawns being mowed or a reno via time lapse.

Chicago

Post by dfw_pilot » April 4th, 2015, 10:37 pm

I think this one turned out pretty cool. We end up flying right over the top of O'Hare, then turn toward downtown before we turn back to the airport. (My landing was smoother than the video shows :D ) For the eagle eyed, both Comiskey and Wrigley had their stadium lights on.

dfw_pilot, What's the highest altitude you've seen migratory birds on one of your flights?

How often do you see them? Just curious.

Birds

Post by dfw_pilot » April 5th, 2015, 12:41 pm

We never see birds more than a few thousand feet up; usually the first few minutes after takeoff and the last few minutes before landing.

dfw_pilot, when I saw your post I immediately thought of this link: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news ... s-animals/

I imagine they can hear or feel your plane coming, so they get the heck out the way!! :D

dfw_pilot, one more question, sorry if it's off topic. I read that pilots don't have a chemical oxygen generator in the pilots cabin. True or false?

Those are really cool. You must have a mount for your phone?

I just use sticky tack and set it up against the front glass on the coaming (dash). It's hands free and out of sight while flying.

More

Post by dfw_pilot » April 5th, 2015, 9:52 pm

I'll post any good ones that I get, but it's not always conducive -- bad weather, too dark, turbulence, etc. But I'll share them as I get them.

Can you control the rate? The first video is 30 minutes in :38 can you make 30 minutes into like 2 minutes, so everything is a little slower? I don't have an iphone, so I don't have a clue of what your options may be.
