Another ORD

Post by dfw_pilot » July 29th, 2015, 2:53 pm

Another one into Chicago and edited on the iPhone. I'm still waiting for a decent one into somewhere like NYC or HKG (or better yet, DFW!!)

During blind tunneling work underground, as is found in cities like Chicago, New York, the English Channel,New Zealand, etc.,etc. we were told that the gripper forces exerted against the bedrock walls, which held the machine on course, were the equivalent of the maximum landing forces on a 747 plane,(aircraft) ? Maximum gripper pressures without fracturing the tunnel walls, enabled faster boring, which meant more force against the tunnel face.
The numbers tossed around were that the maximum landing force on the landing gear on a 747 was designed to withstand 750 tons of force. A 680,00 pound payload that you mentioned, plus the aircraft weight, was within design standards? J/K

Sorry, I don't follow.

She's a great girl, though. Max takeoff is just under 1 million pounds, and with a fire on takeoff, we're coming right back around for landing. Make it smooth and the Boeing gear will be just fine. Amazing.

Thank the Lord for competent American engineers. With the help of skilled craftsmen and women, the ways in which we enjoy progress are bountiful. Let's not forget the many scientists, doctors, and inventors who make our lives more comfortable.

Since you don't follow my trend of thought, let me explain. I was asking; does the maximum force that was designed to withstand Impact on the landing gear on a 747 aircraft have a maximum threshold? How much weight, friction, and impact can it withstand? Just curious.

Landing Gear

It absolutely does. However, I have no idea what that limit would be.

Yeah, that was more or less my point.Dfw, you are the pilot and operator of an extremely xpesive piece of equipment; and yet, there is a supposedly piece of knowledge that you are supposed to know. With the way most corporate entities are structured, ome information is hidden. This is based on the "need to know" structure of American businesses nowadays. I hope you never find out by default what you should have been taught from the beginning of your training. American corporate structure leaves the average worker without any knowledge of best practices and knowledge nowadays; or so it seems. Good Luck on all of your flights in the future.Your knowledge; plus that of the corporate "suit" people, hopefully, will see you through.

Pilots don't know structural limits on landing gear stress tests; that's for the FAA and engineers to quibble over.

To be clear, I don't work for an American company. Either way, the corporate structure isn't who teaches us best practices or systems knowledge. There is a lot more to chat about in all that, and I'd be happy to further it via PM, but it doesn't look like you have that option enabled[?]

These two videos are not mine, but I think they are the holy grail of 747 time lapse productions. If you enjoy aviation at all, you'll appreciate these two.

Very Cool, I had a feeling that's how all pilots get dressed in the morning! I'm curious what they used to film that belly shot.

Not Mine

Post by dfw_pilot » October 22nd, 2015, 1:04 pm

This isn't mine, but it's awesome enough freaking amazing so I just had to share. It's much better than mine. I've been a part of approaches similar to this, but not this fantastic. The turn toward the mountains in the clouds is eerie enough, and I'm instrument rated! You'll never guess where the runway is until the end . . .

Enjoy!

Engineers use some standardized safety factor when they build stuff like this.
